The St. Louis Cardinals have secured one of baseball’s brightest young talents for the foreseeable future, reportedly agreeing to an eight-year contract extension with standout rookie second baseman JJ Wetherholt, a deal worth $112.5 million that could increase to $132 million through performance-based incentives.
Multiple reports indicate the extension will begin with the 2027 season and keep Wetherholt under club control through the 2034 campaign, making him a cornerstone of the Cardinals’ long-term plans.
The agreement comes during a remarkable rookie season for the 23-year-old infielder, who has quickly emerged as one of the National League’s top young players after making an immediate impact on both offense and defense.
Cardinals President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom praised Wetherholt’s rapid development, professionalism and leadership, saying the organization has been impressed by every aspect of his game since selecting him in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Bloom described Wetherholt as a dynamic player who contributes in every phase of the game while consistently demonstrating preparation, work ethic and a team-first mentality. He added that the young infielder represents the Cardinals organization with class both on and off the field and is expected to play a central role in the franchise’s pursuit of future championships.
Selected seventh overall in the 2024 draft out of West Virginia University, Wetherholt has wasted little time establishing himself as one of baseball’s premier young infielders.
Entering Friday’s action, he was batting .267 with 13 home runs, 36 RBIs and strong all-around production across 87 games. His 13 home runs are the most ever hit by a rookie second baseman in Cardinals franchise history, underscoring the offensive impact he has made during his debut campaign.
Wetherholt has been equally impressive defensively. According to advanced defensive metrics, he leads all Major League second basemen with 12 runs prevented, showcasing exceptional range, instincts and reliability in the field while providing Gold Glove-caliber defense.
His rise through the Cardinals’ farm system was equally impressive. After starring at West Virginia, Wetherholt enjoyed a dominant 2025 season in the minors, earning Texas League Most Valuable Player honors despite appearing in only 62 games for Double-A Springfield.
His rapid ascent from top draft pick to everyday major league contributor has reinforced the Cardinals’ belief that he can anchor the infield for years to come.
The reported extension also marks an important milestone for the organization, as Wetherholt becomes the first Cardinals player currently under contract for the 2027 season, highlighting the club’s commitment to building its future around one of the game’s most promising young stars.
