Less than 24 hours after spoiling Kyle Schwarber’s bid for a Home Run Derby title, Walker was welcomed by a chorus of boos from Philadelphia’s passionate fans.
The hostile reception came during player introductions before Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, as Phillies supporters made their feelings clear toward the reigning Home Run Derby champion. Walker’s dramatic victory over hometown favorite Schwarber on Monday night ensured he would become one of the most unpopular visiting players in the stadium, at least for one evening.
Philadelphia fans are well known for their unwavering loyalty and intense competitiveness, and they extended that energy throughout the All-Star festivities. Walker wasn’t the only player to hear boos, as stars representing rival clubs such as the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Dodgers also received chilly welcomes from the packed crowd.
Still, Walker’s reception stood out because of what had unfolded the night before.
The Cardinals outfielder delivered one of the most memorable moments of All-Star Week by defeating Schwarber in a thrilling Home Run Derby final. Schwarber posted 11 home runs in the championship round, a total many including Phillies teammate Bryce Harper believed would be enough to secure the title.
Walker, however, had other plans.
Displaying remarkable composure under pressure, the 24-year-old launched 12 home runs to steal the championship, capping his performance by crushing home runs on each of his final five swings. His dramatic finish silenced the hometown crowd while earning him the first Home Run Derby crown of his career.
Although Philadelphia fans were disappointed to see Schwarber fall just short on his home field, the duel between the two sluggers was widely praised as one of the most exciting Derby finals in recent memory.
Walker carried that momentum into Tuesday’s All-Star Game, where he joined the National League roster despite not earning a starting spot. His selection has been well deserved after enjoying the best offensive season of his young career.
Entering the All-Star break, Walker leads Major League Baseball with 74 RBIs while also setting a new career high with 22 home runs. His combination of power and run production has helped establish him as one of the National League’s premier hitters.
Schwarber, meanwhile, still owns the MLB lead in home runs with 32, reinforcing his status as one of baseball’s most dangerous power hitters despite narrowly missing out on the Derby trophy.
