For much of the 2026 season, it has been difficult for Texas Rangers fans to find reasons for optimism. Injuries, inconsistent performances, and missed opportunities have made the campaign feel far longer than anyone expected. But after months of searching for answers, the Rangers are finally showing signs of becoming the team many believed they could be.
Heading into the All-Star break, Texas has built valuable momentum and sits atop the American League West with a 1.5-game lead over the Seattle Mariners. While the division has lacked a true dominant team this season, the Rangers have taken advantage of recent opportunities and finally appear to be gaining control of the race.
Jacob Latz Emerges as an Unlikely All-Star Story
One of the biggest surprises of the Rangers’ season has been the remarkable emergence of Jacob Latz.
Initially expected to compete for a starting rotation spot before ultimately losing that battle to Kumar Rocker, Latz has reinvented himself as one of the most reliable relievers in baseball. His transition to the bullpen has transformed both his career and the Rangers’ late-inning success.
Latz earned the distinction of being Texas’ lone All-Star representative in 2026, thanks largely to a dominant June in which he captured American League Reliever of the Month honors.
During that stretch, he recorded an MLB-leading 11 saves while posting an outstanding 1.13 ERA over 16 innings, becoming one of the league’s most dependable closers and providing much-needed stability at the back end of the bullpen.
Winning Streak Changed the Rangers’ Outlook
Texas entered the All-Star break riding the momentum of a six-game winning streak that began near the end of June.
That hot stretch completely changed the atmosphere surrounding the club. Instead of merely trying to stay afloat, the Rangers suddenly looked like a team capable of winning the division.
Although their lead remains slim, the confidence surrounding the clubhouse is noticeably stronger than it was just a few weeks ago.
Rangers Finally Seizing Control of the AL West
Considering the struggles across the American League West this season, many expected the Rangers to establish themselves much earlier.
Instead, Texas spent much of the first half chasing the Mariners, who briefly appeared ready to pull away with the division in early June.
Now, the tables have turned.
The Rangers have overtaken Seattle and currently control first place, putting themselves in the driver’s seat entering the second half of the season.
Corey Seager’s Slump Tested the Team
One of the biggest reasons Texas struggled early was the prolonged slump of franchise shortstop Corey Seager.
The veteran endured one of the toughest stretches of his career, going 0-for-27 with 11 strikeouts, numbers that were especially concerning given his role as the team’s offensive leader.
Reports suggested Seager had been battling through an injury, which may have contributed to his struggles. Regardless of the cause, his offensive drought created a major challenge for the Rangers during a critical part of the season.
Supporting Cast Stepped Up
Fortunately for Texas, several other players answered the call while Seager searched for his rhythm.
Ezequiel Durán has emerged as one of the team’s biggest surprises, providing a spark with his consistent production and energy.
Meanwhile, Jake Burger has established himself as the Rangers’ primary power threat, leading the club in home runs, while Josh Jung has delivered one of the team’s most consistent bats, carrying a team-best .298 batting average.
Their contributions have helped keep Texas afloat and eventually pushed the club into first place.
Astros Still Lurking, But Rangers Hold the Advantage
Although the Houston Astros remain within striking distance at three games back, the remainder of the division has largely fallen out of contention.
The Athletics trail by eight games, while the Los Angeles Angels sit even further behind, leaving what has become essentially a three-team race in the AL West.
Momentum Must Continue After the Break
While the Rangers have finally given their fans legitimate reasons to believe, the hardest part still lies ahead.
Maintaining this momentum through August and September will be essential if Texas hopes to capture the division and return to the postseason. The first half proved how quickly fortunes can change, making consistency the biggest challenge moving forward.
Still, after months of frustration and uncertainty, the Rangers finally appear to be playing their best baseball at exactly the right time a welcome sight for a fan base eager to see its team finish the season strong.
