Former Auburn standout Johni Broome is about to begin an exciting new chapter in his young NBA career, and he’ll be doing it alongside one of basketball’s all-time greatest players.
The Philadelphia 76ers officially signed LeBron James to a two-year, $8 million contract, completing one of the most stunning free-agent moves in recent NBA history. The blockbuster signing instantly transforms Philadelphia into a championship contender and gives Broome the opportunity to learn from and play beside one of the game’s most accomplished superstars.
Broome, who was selected No. 35 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, now enters his second NBA season with a unique chance to develop under the guidance of the four-time NBA champion.
LeBron Chooses Philadelphia Over Several Top Contenders
Leading up to free agency, many expected James to finish his career elsewhere.
The Cleveland Cavaliers were viewed as a sentimental favorite, offering another homecoming for the franchise icon. The Miami Heat were another rumored destination, where James could have reunited with a former organization while joining forces with stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors were frequently mentioned because of the possibility of pairing James with Stephen Curry in what many considered a dream basketball fit.
Instead, Philadelphia emerged as the surprise winner.
The Sixers had already made headlines earlier in the offseason by acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in a blockbuster trade while also shedding Paul George’s contract. That aggressive move helped create a roster capable of attracting another superstar.
With Brown joining Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and promising rookie V.J. Edgecombe, Philadelphia presented James with a veteran contender loaded with both established stars and emerging talent.
Rather than carrying the entire franchise as he has for much of his career, James now joins a roster where he can focus on leadership, playmaking, and championship pursuits.
Johni Broome Could Benefit Tremendously
For Broome, LeBron’s arrival represents much more than simply sharing the locker room with an NBA legend.
Throughout his career, James has consistently elevated the play of young teammates, particularly athletic big men capable of finishing around the basket.
If Broome earns consistent minutes, he could thrive in pick-and-roll situations, receive easy scoring opportunities created by James’ elite passing ability, and continue developing as a floor-spacing forward capable of knocking down outside shots.
LeBron’s basketball IQ and willingness to mentor younger players could also accelerate Broome’s growth during a critical stage of his professional career.
Playing Time Won’t Come Easily
Despite the exciting opportunity, Broome still faces a significant challenge.
Philadelphia has several young frontcourt players competing for rotational minutes, including Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti. Both players will battle Broome for playing time throughout training camp and the regular season.
Broome’s impressive performances during NBA Summer League strengthened his case, showcasing improved athleticism, rebounding, and finishing ability around the rim.
However, he’ll still need to prove he can consistently contribute at the NBA level before securing a permanent role in head coach Nick Nurse’s rotation.
Looking to Build on a Difficult Rookie Season
Broome’s rookie campaign was far from ideal.
He struggled offensively, converting just four of his first 24 field-goal attempts while missing all five of his three-point shots. He also shot only 2-for-6 from the free-throw line, highlighting the adjustment period many second-round rookies experience during their first NBA season.
Still, his Summer League performance suggested meaningful progress, giving the organization optimism that he can become a reliable contributor moving forward.
Now, with LeBron joining the franchise, Broome has an opportunity to reset expectations and continue developing in an environment built around winning.
New Era Begins in Philadelphia
LeBron James’ arrival signals the beginning of a new era for the 76ers.
While the future Hall of Famer is expected to share the spotlight with Philadelphia’s established stars, his leadership, experience, and championship pedigree could have a lasting impact throughout the organization.
For Johni Broome, that means the opportunity of a lifetime.
If he can carve out a role in the rotation, the former Auburn star won’t just be playing alongside one of the greatest players in NBA history he’ll have the chance to learn from him every day while pursuing the first meaningful minutes of his professional career.
