The Washington Nationals have unexpectedly found themselves in the thick of the National League Wild Card race, and with the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the front office could be forced to decide whether it’s time to accelerate the franchise’s postseason ambitions.
If Washington chooses to buy rather than sell, one intriguing option could be New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes, whose name has surfaced as a potential trade candidate despite spending the last two months recovering from injury.
Nationals Suddenly in the Playoff Conversation
As of July 23, the Nationals sat just 1.5 games behind the final National League Wild Card spot, putting them firmly in contention much later into the season than many expected.
That surprising position has created a new sense of optimism around the club. Manager Blake Butera has emphasized that his players are embracing the pressure of meaningful late-season baseball a situation Washington hasn’t experienced consistently since its championship window closed several years ago.
However, if the Nationals hope to remain in the race through September and earn a trip to October, strengthening the starting rotation appears to be one of the organization’s biggest priorities.
Clay Holmes Could Be an Ideal Rotation Addition
One pitcher who could fit that need is Mets right-hander Clay Holmes.
After establishing himself as one of baseball’s top relievers and earning two All-Star selections, Holmes successfully transitioned into a starting role. He impressed during his first full season in the rotation, posting a 3.53 ERA across 33 appearances, including 31 starts.
He looked even better to begin the 2026 campaign.
Before suffering a fractured fibula in mid-May, Holmes recorded a sparkling 2.39 ERA through his first nine starts, demonstrating that his move from the bullpen to the rotation was no fluke.
Although the injury has sidelined him for more than two months, Holmes is working toward a return, and reports suggest the Mets could make him available before the trade deadline.
Holmes Would Strengthen Washington’s Rotation
If acquired, Holmes would immediately become one of the Nationals’ most reliable starting pitchers.
He would likely slot into the top portion of the rotation alongside Cade Cavalli and Foster Griffin, giving Washington a much stronger trio for a potential playoff push.
Adding another proven starter would also create greater flexibility throughout the pitching staff. With Holmes handling regular starts, pitchers such as Jake Irvin or Andrew Alvarez could shift into long-relief roles, providing manager Blake Butera with additional bullpen depth during the season’s final stretch.
That type of versatility could prove invaluable if the Nationals remain in contention.
Trade Won’t Come Cheap
Landing Holmes, however, will be far from simple.
According to reports, the veteran right-hander is expected to attract significant interest from multiple contenders around the league, meaning the Mets should have no shortage of suitors.
Complicating matters even further is the fact that any deal between New York and Washington would involve division rivals, traditionally making negotiations more difficult.
The financial commitment is another factor.
Holmes is earning $13 million this season and also holds a $12 million player option for the 2027 campaign. That means whichever team acquires him may be taking on more than just a short-term rental, increasing both his value and the overall cost of a potential trade.
Nationals Must Decide How Aggressive to Be
The biggest question facing Washington is whether it truly believes this year’s team is capable of making a legitimate postseason run.
If the answer is yes, then adding a proven starter like Holmes would make plenty of sense. His experience, consistency, and ability to stabilize the rotation could significantly improve the Nationals’ chances of staying in the playoff race.
If the front office instead views this season as an opportunity to continue building for the future, it may be reluctant to part with the young talent necessary to complete a deal.
Deadline Decision Looms
With the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching, Washington’s direction remains uncertain.
But should the Nationals commit to chasing a playoff berth, Clay Holmes could emerge as one of their most logical and impactful trade targets. His availability gives the club an opportunity to upgrade both its rotation and bullpen while signaling that meaningful baseball has truly returned to the nation’s capital.
