The Philadelphia Phillies bounced back in emphatic fashion on Sunday night, avoiding a three-game sweep by overpowering the New York Yankees with an impressive 11-4 victory at Citizens Bank Park. Fueled by explosive performances from Bryson Stott and Alec Bohm, the Phillies’ offense erupted for 11 runs, providing a much-needed lift after a sluggish start to the second half of the season.
Stott and Bohm were the driving forces behind Philadelphia’s offensive outburst, combining for nine RBIs and consistently delivering in key moments. Stott finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a home run and a clutch three-run double, while Bohm collected four RBIs, scored two runs, and delivered one of the game’s biggest hits with a bases-clearing double.
The victory was also another strong outing for All-Star left-hander Cristopher Sanchez, who improved to 13-4 on the season. Sanchez worked six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while issuing three walks and striking out six batters. Although he encountered trouble during the fifth inning, he settled down quickly and needed just 10 pitches to retire the Yankees in the sixth before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Philadelphia struck first in the opening inning before extending its lead in the second. Stott launched a solo home run off Yankees starter Will Warren, giving the Phillies a comfortable 2-0 advantage and setting the tone for the evening.
The Phillies broke the game open in the third inning. Bohm ripped a three-run double into the gap to stretch the lead to 5-0, and moments later, Stott added another RBI with a run-scoring single, pushing Philadelphia ahead 6-0 and putting the Yankees on their heels early.
New York refused to go quietly, mounting a rally in the fifth inning. The Yankees scored three runs, highlighted by Anthony Volpe’s RBI double, trimming the deficit to 6-3. Sanchez faced his toughest inning of the night, surrendering three hits, issuing a walk, committing an error, and throwing a wild pitch before escaping further damage.
With the momentum briefly shifting toward New York, the Phillies answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth. Facing reliever Ryan Yarbrough, Philadelphia opened the inning with four consecutive singles, including an RBI knock from Trea Turner, who finished with two hits and two runs scored.
The Phillies weren’t finished. With the bases loaded and two outs, Yarbrough hit Bohm with a pitch to force home another run. Stott then delivered the decisive blow, crushing a three-run double that capped a five-run inning and extended Philadelphia’s lead to 11-3, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The Yankees managed one final run in the seventh when All-Star Ben Rice, who enjoyed another productive night with a double, a home run, and two runs scored, launched a solo homer off left-hander Tim Mayza. However, it was far too little, too late as Philadelphia cruised to the convincing victory.
The win was an important one for the Phillies, who had dropped six of their first eight games after the All-Star break. Behind a dominant offensive performance and another quality start from Sanchez, Philadelphia regained some momentum and prevented the Yankees from completing a weekend sweep while sending a strong message as the season’s stretch run approaches.
