With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the Texas Rangers are expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of bullpen reinforcements as they continue their battle with the Seattle Mariners atop the American League West. Holding a slim 1.5-game division lead with just a week remaining before the deadline, the Rangers know that strengthening their relief corps could be the key to maintaining their advantage and making a deep postseason run.
While Texas has received solid production from several relievers this season, the back end of the bullpen remains an area that could use another dependable high-leverage arm. As a result, trade speculation has intensified, and one name continues to emerge as an ideal fit: New York Mets reliever Luke Weaver.
According to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, the Rangers are projected to strike a deal with the Mets to acquire the veteran right-hander, who has quietly been one of baseball’s most effective relievers this season. Lin believes Weaver would provide an immediate boost to a bullpen that has shown inconsistency at times despite the club’s success in the standings.
Although Weaver may not generate the same level of excitement as former Rangers acquisition Aroldis Chapman, who played a pivotal role during Texas’ 2023 World Series championship run, his impact could be just as valuable. Weaver has developed into a reliable late-inning weapon capable of handling high-pressure situations and even closing games when necessary.
The Rangers have certainly received encouraging performances from relievers such as Jacob Latz, who owns an outstanding 1.69 ERA, but adding another proven late-game option would give manager Bruce Bochy far greater flexibility during the stretch run and into October. A bullpen featuring another elite arm alongside the current group could significantly improve Texas’ chances of holding onto close leads against playoff-caliber opponents.
Weaver has been exceptional throughout the 2026 campaign. In 40 appearances, the 32-year-old has posted a sparkling 1.93 ERA, recording 43 strikeouts over 42 innings while contributing 1.8 bWAR. His ability to consistently limit baserunners has been equally impressive, as evidenced by his outstanding 0.833 WHIP.
Advanced metrics further reinforce that Weaver’s breakout season is no fluke. He owns a 2.92 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP), suggesting his dominance is supported by strong underlying performance rather than good fortune. His 217 ERA+, the highest mark of his career, illustrates just how far above league average he has been in preventing runs this season.
Another major reason Weaver appeals to the Rangers is his contract situation. Unlike many trade deadline acquisitions who become free agents after the season, Weaver is under team control through the 2027 season as part of his two-year, $22 million contract. That means Texas would not simply be acquiring a short-term rental but a proven high-leverage reliever who could remain a key part of the bullpen for another season beyond this year’s playoff push.
As the August 3 trade deadline draws closer, the Rangers are expected to explore every opportunity to strengthen their roster. If Dennis Lin’s prediction proves accurate, acquiring Luke Weaver could be one of the most impactful moves Texas makes, giving the club another dominant late-inning option as it looks to fend off Seattle in the AL West and position itself for another serious World Series run.
