Former Auburn wide receiver Camden Brown made an immediate statement in his NFL preseason debut Saturday, producing one of the most impressive performances of the Dallas Cowboys’ opening exhibition game.

Brown caught three passes for 62 yards and scored two touchdowns on three targets as Dallas defeated the Seattle Seahawks 17-7. His perfect three-target, three-catch performance showcased the explosiveness, confidence and big-play ability that made him an intriguing prospect coming out of college.

For Brown, the performance was particularly notable because it came after an inconsistent college career at Auburn, where he never received the level of opportunities many believed his talent warranted.

Brown arrived at Auburn with considerable promise and quickly turned heads during his first preseason camp in 2022. Despite showing the physical tools to become a major contributor, his production never reached the level expected of a receiver with his combination of size, speed and ball skills.

He began his Auburn career under former head coach Bryan Harsin. Brown’s freshman season was challenging for several reasons, including an offense that struggled to consistently create downfield opportunities. Auburn did not have a quarterback capable of regularly taking advantage of Brown’s ability to stretch defenses.

As a result, Brown finished his freshman season with only nine receptions for 123 yards. He did, however, score two touchdowns, tying him for second on the team in receiving touchdowns.

His limited production continued to raise questions about how Auburn was utilizing him.

When Hugh Freeze took over the program, expectations increased that Brown would finally receive a larger role. Instead, his opportunities remained inconsistent, particularly during the 2023 season.

Auburn had several receivers competing for targets, and players such as Caleb Burton III, Jay Fair and Ja’Varrius Johnson were frequently prioritized within the offensive structure. Brown possessed significant upside, but his ability to consistently demonstrate it in game situations was limited.

Eventually, Brown transferred to Georgia Southern, where he finally received the opportunity to become a focal point of an offense.

The difference was dramatic.

During his lone season at Georgia Southern, Brown recorded 65 receptions for 1,079 yards and 14 touchdowns. His 14 touchdown catches led the Sun Belt, while his yardage production demonstrated just how much offensive impact he could provide when given consistent opportunities.

That breakout season helped revive his professional prospects and eventually led to an opportunity with the Cowboys.

Dallas signed Brown as an undrafted free agent, meaning he entered training camp without the security of being an early draft selection. Consequently, every practice, preseason snap and special-teams opportunity became important as he attempted to earn a place on the Cowboys’ roster.

His first preseason game could hardly have gone better.

Brown immediately displayed the same ability that had made him productive at Georgia Southern. His three receptions produced 62 yards, and two of those catches resulted in touchdowns. Rather than simply making routine catches, he showed the ability to make explosive plays and finish drives.

The performance also caught the attention of Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer explained that Brown’s preseason production was not a surprise to the coaching staff because he has consistently performed at a high level during practices. The coach also pointed to Brown’s willingness to contribute on special teams and handle the less glamorous aspects of the job as important factors in his attempt to make the roster.

That could ultimately be crucial for Brown.

As an undrafted receiver competing for a roster spot, simply producing spectacular catches is not always enough. Coaches also want players who can contribute on special teams, execute assignments correctly and demonstrate consistency in practice.

Brown appears to understand that reality.

After the game, he described the mindset that has followed him throughout his football career. His confidence when the ball is in the air has always been a major part of his game, and he said that mentality was developed during his time at both Georgia Southern and Auburn.

That confidence was on full display against Seattle.

Brown’s performance is also likely to reignite conversations about what might have happened had Auburn found a way to maximize his abilities earlier in his college career.

The receiver had the physical tools to become one of Auburn’s most dangerous offensive weapons, but his three seasons on the Plains never produced the type of statistical breakout many expected after watching him in practice and during recruiting evaluations.

His Georgia Southern season ultimately provided the evidence that his Auburn critics and supporters needed: when Brown was given consistent opportunities, he could produce at an elite level.

Now, he has a completely different opportunity in Dallas.

The Cowboys already have established offensive weapons, but Brown’s preseason emergence could put him into the conversation for a meaningful roster role. His combination of size, athleticism, contested-catch ability and red-zone potential could make him particularly valuable if he continues to perform throughout the preseason.

The two-touchdown debut does not guarantee Brown a roster spot, but it gives him an excellent starting point.

For Auburn fans, meanwhile, his performance represents something of a reminder of the talent that passed through the program during a difficult stretch. Brown was one of several players whose potential was never fully realized during Auburn’s struggles under Harsin and Freeze.

While Auburn can rightly point to Brown as one of its former players, Georgia Southern was ultimately the place where he was able to turn his potential into production.

Now the Cowboys are giving him another chance to prove what he can do with an opportunity.

If Brown can maintain the consistency he has shown in Dallas’ practices and preseason opener, his journey from an underused Auburn receiver to a potential NFL contributor could become one of the more intriguing preseason stories in Dallas.

For one night at least, Brown made the message unmistakable: when the ball is thrown his way, he intends to make something happen.
