The Los Angeles Angels surprised many around Major League Baseball at the 2026 trade deadline not because they chose to become sellers, but because they moved several key players who still had multiple years of team control remaining. Rather than dealing impending free agents, the organization parted ways with valuable young talent, raising questions about its long-term strategy.
Among the players traded were pitcher Jose Soriano, reliever Ryan Zeferjahn, and outfielder Jo Adell, all of whom were under club control beyond the 2026 season. While those trades generally brought back respectable returns, one particular move quickly became the subject of widespread criticism from baseball analysts and executives alike.
Former MLB general manager and current analyst Jim Bowden was especially critical of the Angels’ decision to send catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth to the Texas Rangers in exchange for infield prospect Angel Arredondo. Bowden went as far as calling it the “worst trade” completed during the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
According to Bowden, the return simply did not reflect the value of the players the Angels gave up. He argued that most organizations viewed Arredondo as little more than a fringe prospect or organizational depth piece, making it difficult to justify surrendering two controllable major league contributors for such a modest package.
The criticism centers particularly on Silseth’s value. The 26-year-old reliever had been one of the Angels’ more dependable bullpen arms, posting a strong 2.72 ERA across 47 appearances before the trade. Even more importantly, he remains under team control through the 2030 season, giving him significant long-term value. Many evaluators believed Silseth alone should have been capable of bringing back a much stronger prospect package, making the inclusion of O’Hoppe even more puzzling.
O’Hoppe’s departure also raised eyebrows given his youth and potential at one of baseball’s most demanding positions. Catchers with offensive upside and years of club control are highly valued across the league, leading many observers to believe the Angels could have negotiated a far better return if they had explored additional trade options.
The deal has been compared with several other controversial deadline moves, including the Detroit Tigers trading ace Tarik Skubal and the Baltimore Orioles moving stars Taylor Ward and Adley Rutschman. However, Bowden believes the Angels’ transaction stands out as the most questionable because of the perceived imbalance between what they surrendered and what they received.
Of course, the Angels may have identified untapped potential in Arredondo that other organizations overlooked. If he develops into a productive major league infielder, the trade could eventually be viewed differently. Until then, however, many around baseball see the transaction as a significant gamble—one that could haunt Los Angeles for years, particularly if O’Hoppe and Silseth flourish with a division rival like the Rangers.
