Arsenal’s transfer plans have been thrown into fresh uncertainty after reports emerged that Barcelona are preparing an opening bid for highly sought-after Atletico Madrid striker Julián Álvarez a move that could spark one of the biggest transfer battles of the summer window.

The Arsenal, led by manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta, have long identified Álvarez as a priority target ahead of the 2026–27 campaign. Their pursuit dates back to January 2026, when internal talks and exploratory discussions with the player’s representatives first revealed strong interest from the Emirates hierarchy. Since then, however, competition has intensified significantly, with both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain entering the race for the World Cup-winning forward.
Despite the growing list of elite suitors, Arsenal remain confident they can still secure the Argentine striker’s signature. Fresh off a Premier League title-winning campaign and preparing for a high-stakes Champions League final against PSG, the Gunners believe their sporting project under Arteta has become increasingly attractive to top-level players seeking both stability and silverware.
However, the situation has now escalated after multiple reports indicated Barcelona are moving aggressively to formalize their interest. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Catalan giants are actively preparing an official bid for Álvarez, following direct discussions with his representatives and intermediaries.
According to Romano, Barcelona’s approach will not include any player exchange and will instead be a straight cash proposal aimed at testing Atlético Madrid’s resolve. His update suggests that Álvarez has already communicated his desire to leave the Spanish capital after previously rejecting a contract extension.
Atletico Madrid, however, are in a strong negotiating position and have placed a massive valuation of around €150 million on their star forward, according to Sky Sports. That price tag sets the stage for a complex and highly competitive bidding war involving Europe’s elite clubs.
Further reports from Catalonia indicate Barcelona sporting director Deco held lengthy discussions with Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in a meeting that reportedly lasted several hours. Barcelona are believed to be preparing an initial offer in the region of €90 million plus add-ons, although Atletico are expected to resist anything far below their valuation.
Even with Barcelona accelerating their push, Arsenal are still very much in the conversation. Sources suggest both the Gunners and PSG have received encouragement that Álvarez could be open to their projects if a move to Barcelona fails to materialize. That uncertainty leaves the door open for Arsenal to make their move at a critical moment in the window.

Álvarez’s pedigree only increases the urgency surrounding the chase. A proven winner at the highest level, he has already lifted multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League, and domestic cups during his time at Manchester City, while also playing a key role in Argentina’s World Cup and Copa América triumphs.
As the transfer saga develops, Arsenal now face a defining challenge: hold their ground against Barcelona’s growing momentum or risk missing out on one of the most complete forwards in world football.
