The St. Louis Cardinals will continue their demanding 11-game road trip Wednesday night when they return to Great American Ball Park for the fourth game of a five-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. With the postseason race becoming increasingly important, St. Louis will look to maintain its recent momentum while trying to put another win on the board against a struggling Cincinnati club.
The Cardinals enter the matchup having won six of their last eight games, and Tuesday’s 3-0 victory provided another encouraging sign for the club. Shortstop Masyn Winn was at the center of the offensive breakthrough, delivering one of his best performances of the series after entering Cincinnati mired in an 0-for-15 slump.
Winn went 3-for-4 on Tuesday, collecting two doubles and a solo home run that helped power St. Louis to the shutout victory. His fifth homer of the season came against Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott and capped a memorable night for the young shortstop, who was celebrating the three-year anniversary of his Major League debut.
After struggling to find consistent production at the plate, Winn said he had remained focused on making quality contact and eventually seeing results. His three-hit performance could be an important confidence boost as the Cardinals continue their lengthy stretch away from home.
Winn had already shown signs of breaking out earlier in the series, recording a hit in each of the first two games. His three-hit explosion Tuesday, however, represented a much more significant turnaround and gave St. Louis another productive bat in the lineup.
Reds Searching for Offensive Answers
While the Cardinals have begun to find their rhythm, Cincinnati has gone in the opposite direction. The Reds have experienced significant offensive struggles, scoring one run or fewer in six of their last 10 games.
Despite those difficulties, Cincinnati managed to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Miami last Friday. Rookie right-hander Chase Burns delivered the key performance, shutting down the Marlins for seven scoreless innings while striking out eight.
Burns will take the mound again Wednesday against St. Louis, presenting the Cardinals with one of their toughest pitching challenges of the series.
The 23-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most dominant young pitchers in the National League. Burns enters the game with a remarkable 14-2 record and a 2.47 ERA, along with 151 strikeouts. His performance has been strong enough to place him firmly in the conversation for the National League Cy Young Award.
His emergence has also created an interesting workload discussion. Burns has already thrown 131 innings this season, surpassing his previous career high. With the young starter taking on a substantially larger workload, questions have emerged about whether Cincinnati could eventually limit his innings or shut him down before the end of the season.
Reds manager Terry Francona, however, has made it clear that workload concerns are not currently changing the team’s approach. Francona remains focused on using Burns while the club is trying to win games, emphasizing that the right-hander is currently in a good position physically.
Burns has credited a straightforward approach for much of his success. His upper-90s fastball and powerful slider have allowed him to challenge hitters aggressively rather than constantly trying to paint the corners. That confidence and ability to attack the strike zone have made him particularly difficult to handle.
Liberatore Gets the Ball for St. Louis
The Cardinals will counter with left-hander Matthew Liberatore, who enters Wednesday’s game with a 5-10 record and a 5.07 ERA.
Liberatore has experienced an inconsistent stretch recently. After pitching six scoreless innings against Toronto on Aug. 2, he has dropped his last two starts. His most recent outing came against the Chicago Cubs last Friday, when he surrendered two runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 3-0 defeat.
The Cardinals will need Liberatore to deliver a quality start against a Cincinnati lineup that has struggled to score but possesses enough talent to capitalize on mistakes. Keeping Burns and the Reds’ offense under control could be particularly important given the way Cincinnati’s young ace has been pitching.
Another Important Road Test
Wednesday’s matchup represents another crucial checkpoint during St. Louis’ season-long 11-game road journey. The Cardinals have already shown encouraging signs during the trip, and another victory in Cincinnati would strengthen their recent momentum while giving them an opportunity to claim the series before Thursday’s finale.
With Winn beginning to heat up, the pitching staff looking for consistency and St. Louis having won six of its last eight games, the Cardinals have several reasons for optimism. But facing a dominant young pitcher such as Burns will require the offense to be patient, aggressive when opportunities arise and capable of capitalizing on limited scoring chances.
