As the MLB trade deadline draws closer, the St. Louis Cardinals remain at a crossroads, with each game carrying significant weight in determining whether they approach the deadline as buyers or sellers. If the club decides to strengthen its roster for a postseason push, one intriguing option could be Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle, a former Gold Glove winner whose value has dropped considerably following injuries and a disappointing season.

Cardinals Still Weighing Deadline Strategy
St. Louis entered the All-Star break with a solid 50-45 record and appeared well-positioned to compete for a National League Wild Card spot.
However, the momentum quickly faded.
The Cardinals have struggled since the break, posting a 3-6 record over their last nine games before rebounding with an important victory over the Cincinnati Reds. That inconsistency has left the front office with difficult decisions as the trade deadline approaches.
Instead of sacrificing valuable prospects for short-term rentals, the Cardinals may choose to focus on younger players who can contribute immediately while also fitting into the club’s long-term plans.
One name gaining attention is Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently identified Doyle as one of the most appealing buy-low candidates available before the deadline.
Although much of the trade speculation surrounding Colorado has centered on All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman, Doyle may quietly represent one of the Rockies’ most intriguing trade assets.
Just two seasons ago, the 28-year-old looked like one of baseball’s emerging stars.
In 2024, Doyle showcased an impressive blend of power, speed, and elite defense, hitting 23 home runs, stealing 30 bases, and earning his second consecutive Gold Glove Award in center field.
His combination of athleticism and defensive excellence made him one of the National League’s most complete outfielders and appeared to establish him as a cornerstone of Colorado’s future.
Injuries Have Derailed His Progress
Since that breakout campaign, however, Doyle has struggled to maintain the same level of production.
He experienced a noticeable offensive decline during the 2025 season, with particularly significant splits between his home and road performances.
This year has been even more frustrating.
Oblique and groin injuries have limited Doyle to just 43 games, preventing him from finding any consistency at the plate.
When healthy, he has posted a disappointing .207 batting average, .279 on-base percentage, and .270 slugging percentage, while producing only one home run and four RBIs.
Those numbers represent the weakest offensive production of his four-year major league career.
Despite the struggles, Doyle recently began a rehabilitation assignment, raising hopes that he could return to the Rockies shortly before the trade deadline.
Cardinals Could Benefit From His Long-Term Upside
While Doyle’s recent statistics are underwhelming, his overall talent remains difficult to ignore.
Elite defensive center fielders with legitimate power and speed rarely become available at a discounted price, making this an opportunity the Cardinals should seriously consider.
Perhaps most importantly, Doyle is under team control through the 2029 season, meaning St. Louis would not simply be acquiring a short-term rental.
Instead, the Cardinals could potentially secure a long-term solution in center field if Doyle rediscovers the form that once made him one of baseball’s brightest young outfielders.
