The St. Louis Cardinals have exceeded expectations during the first half of the 2026 season, accelerating their rebuilding timeline under president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom. After entering the year with one of baseball’s top-ranked farm systems and a roster filled with emerging talent, the Cardinals have positioned themselves firmly in the playoff conversation while continuing to build for the future.
Bloom’s vision began taking shape after the organization moved several veteran stars, including Nolan Arenado, Brendan Donovan, Willson Contreras, and Sonny Gray, in an effort to create opportunities for younger players while strengthening the farm system. The strategy has paid dividends. Young contributors such as Jordan Walker, JJ Wetherholt, and Michael McGreevy have played key roles in the team’s success, helping St. Louis remain competitive despite entering the season with modest expectations.
While the Cardinals have impressed with a winning record and significant player development, the roster still has areas that require attention. The starting rotation remains a concern, particularly with Matthew Liberatore struggling to provide consistent production. The bullpen has also experienced its share of issues, making pitching the club’s most obvious need heading into the trade deadline.
However, St. Louis is expected to approach the market carefully. Bloom has emphasized that the organization does not intend to sacrifice long-term flexibility for short-term gains, making rental acquisitions unlikely. Instead, the Cardinals are expected to focus on pitchers who offer multiple years of team control and could remain part of the club’s future beyond 2026.
One intriguing possibility is Los Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers. The 26-year-old has revitalized his career since returning to a starting role and has posted a solid 3.93 ERA through 16 starts this season. With two additional years of team control remaining, Detmers represents the type of young, controllable arm that aligns with St. Louis’ long-term plans. A potential deal could involve pitcher Hunter Dobbins and promising prospect Ryan Mitchell, giving the Angels both immediate and future value.
Another realistic option is Kansas City Royals veteran Michael Wacha. Familiar to Cardinals fans from his successful first stint in St. Louis, Wacha has continued to perform at a high level, recording a 3.48 ERA through 16 starts this year. The veteran right-hander also carries an additional year of control beyond the current season, making him more attractive than a typical rental. A trade package centered around prospects Brycen Mautz and Tink Hence could potentially entice Kansas City if it decides to move veteran talent.
The most ambitious target, however, would be Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan. Widely regarded as one of the American League’s top starters, Ryan has delivered another outstanding season with a 3.18 ERA across 17 starts. The 30-year-old earned his first All-Star selection in 2025 and appears poised for another standout campaign.
Unlike Detmers or Wacha, acquiring Ryan would require a substantial investment. A hypothetical package could include outfielder Lars Nootbaar, catching prospect Jimmy Crooks, and top-10 organizational prospect Ryan Mitchell. While the cost would be significant, Ryan’s talent, durability, and remaining year of team control could make him a franchise-altering addition for a Cardinals team seeking a true frontline starter.
St. Louis may be reluctant to part with such valuable assets, but Ryan represents the type of pitcher capable of anchoring a rotation for years. With internal replacements potentially available for players included in the deal, the Cardinals could view the acquisition as a worthwhile gamble if they believe they can negotiate a long-term extension.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Cardinals find themselves in an unusual but favorable position—competing for a playoff spot while still building toward the future. If they choose to strengthen the roster, targeting controllable pitching options such as Reid Detmers, Michael Wacha, or Joe Ryan could provide the perfect balance between immediate improvement and long-term sustainability.
