Major League Baseball’s 2026 season has introduced a wave of impressive rookie talent across both leagues, setting up one of the most competitive Rookie of the Year races in recent memory. With several young players making immediate impacts, the battle for top honors in the National League is especially intense.
Among them, St. Louis Cardinals infielder JJ Wetherholt has positioned himself as the leading candidate to claim the National League Rookie of the Year Award. According to a recent MLB.com poll of 32 experts, Wetherholt narrowly leads the race, edging out Cincinnati Reds infielder Sal Stewart. Wetherholt earned 120 total vote points and 13 first-place votes, compared to Stewart’s 112 points and eight first-place selections.
Selected seventh overall by the Cardinals in the 2024 MLB Draft, Wetherholt entered the season with high expectations as one of the organization’s top prospects—and he has largely delivered. He has quickly established himself as one of the most productive rookie hitters in the National League, contributing across multiple offensive categories.
MLB.com’s Jason Foster highlighted Wetherholt’s consistency and early impact, noting that his debut season has kept him firmly in the award conversation since an opening-day home run set the tone for his campaign. Despite a brief dip in production during May, he has rebounded strongly, hitting .333 with an .807 OPS over his most recent stretch of games.
Statistically, Wetherholt stands out among National League rookies. He leads qualified first-year players in on-base percentage at .358, tops the league in runs scored with 40, and ranks among the leaders in hits and walks. His nine home runs are also among the highest totals for rookies in the NL.
While other young talents such as New York Mets pitcher Nolan McLean and Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Konnor Griffin have also drawn attention, their chances have been affected by performance inconsistency and injury setbacks. McLean’s ERA sits near 4.00, while Griffin is currently sidelined, giving Wetherholt a clearer path to the award.
As the season progresses, Wetherholt’s combination of consistency, discipline, and offensive production continues to separate him from the pack, solidifying his status as the current favorite for one of baseball’s most prestigious rookie honors.
