With the August 3 MLB trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Chicago Cubs are emerging as one of the league’s most active buyers as they continue to strengthen their roster for a postseason push. While Chicago has been linked to several pitching targets in recent weeks, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan believes one move stands above the rest: acquiring Los Angeles Angels left-handed pitcher Reid Detmers, even if it means parting with one of the organization’s fastest-rising prospects.
Speaking on SportsCenter, Passan suggested that the Cubs should aggressively pursue Detmers because he offers something the front office has reportedly prioritized an established starting pitcher who is not only capable of helping immediately but also remains under team control for several more seasons. Unlike rental pitchers who could leave in free agency after the season, Detmers is under club control through the end of the 2028 campaign, making him an attractive long-term investment for a team hoping to contend beyond this year.
According to Passan, the Angels’ biggest area of need could make the two clubs ideal trade partners. Los Angeles is believed to be searching for catching depth, while Chicago possesses one of the hottest catching prospects in the minor leagues, Owen Ayers. Passan argued that Ayers’ breakout season has significantly increased his trade value and could be the type of centerpiece that convinces the Angels to move Detmers.
“The Cubs would love starting pitchers, and they especially want one who is under control for multiple years,” Passan explained. “That’s Reid Detmers of the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels are looking for a catcher, and the Cubs have Owen Ayers, who’s been one of the breakout minor league players this season.”
Detmers, now in his sixth major league season, has experienced an inconsistent 2026 campaign but has continued to flash the talent that once made him one of baseball’s top pitching prospects. Across 125 innings this season, the 27-year-old owns a 4.03 ERA, an impressive 1.096 WHIP, and 145 strikeouts, demonstrating his ability to miss bats despite occasional struggles with consistency. Many evaluators believe a move to a playoff contender like Chicago could help him unlock another level of performance, particularly with the Cubs’ strong defense and competitive environment behind him.
From Chicago’s perspective, adding Detmers would bolster a rotation that could benefit from another reliable arm as the club battles for playoff positioning. His combination of age, strikeout ability, and multiple years of contractual control fits the type of acquisition teams often seek at the trade deadline when looking beyond a single postseason run.
The biggest obstacle, however, may be Chicago’s willingness to part with Ayers. The young catcher has enjoyed a remarkable breakout year throughout the Cubs’ farm system and has quickly established himself as one of the organization’s most exciting offensive prospects. After spending the majority of the season with Double-A Knoxville, Ayers recently earned a promotion to Triple-A Iowa thanks to his outstanding production at the plate.
Through 87 minor league games this season, Ayers has compiled a stellar .320 batting average and a .430 on-base percentage while collecting 99 hits, launching 23 home runs, and driving in 68 runs over 309 at-bats. His combination of power, plate discipline, and consistent contact has dramatically increased his prospect stock, making him a valuable trade chip but also a player the Cubs may hesitate to surrender.
Ultimately, any deal between Chicago and Los Angeles would come down to how the Cubs balance their immediate championship aspirations against their long-term organizational depth. Trading Ayers for Detmers would strengthen the major league rotation with a controllable starter capable of contributing for multiple seasons, but it would also require giving up one of the franchise’s fastest-rising young talents. As the trade deadline draws closer, it remains to be seen whether the Cubs will follow the path Passan has outlined or pursue another avenue to reinforce their pitching staff.
