With the MLB trade deadline fast approaching, the Chicago Cubs remain focused on strengthening their starting rotation, an area widely viewed as the club’s biggest need. While the team has been linked to several high-profile pitchers, including Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, a more attainable long-term option may be emerging in Seattle Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock.
The Cubs are expected to be aggressive in their search for pitching, especially with several members of their current rotation set to become free agents after the season. Rather than pursuing a short-term rental, Chicago appears to be targeting a controllable starter who could remain a key part of the rotation for years to come.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, rival MLB executives believe the Cubs have the strongest chance of acquiring Hancock if the Mariners decide to move the talented right-hander before the deadline. However, league insiders also believe Seattle would demand a significant return, making any potential deal one of the most expensive trades of the summer.
Nightengale reported that the Mariners could seek a package centered around veteran outfielder Seiya Suzuki, with promising young infielder Matt Shaw potentially included as part of the negotiations. Such a proposal would give Seattle immediate offensive help while also adding one of the Cubs’ top young infield talents.
Hancock has dramatically raised his value this season with a breakout campaign. The 27-year-old has posted an impressive 3.26 ERA across 20 starts, establishing himself as one of the American League’s most reliable young starters. Beyond his production, Hancock’s greatest appeal is his long-term value, as he remains under team control through the 2030 season, making him far more valuable than a typical rental available at the deadline.
That combination of youth, consistency, and years of contractual control has made Hancock one of the most coveted pitchers reportedly available on the trade market. For a Cubs team hoping to contend not only this season but for several years, acquiring a pitcher of his caliber could significantly strengthen the front of the rotation.
Still, the reported asking price presents a difficult decision for Chicago’s front office. Suzuki has been an important offensive contributor since arriving from Japan, while Shaw is regarded as one of the organization’s brightest young talents with the potential to become a cornerstone player. Losing both in a single transaction would represent a substantial sacrifice, even if the return is a pitcher with Hancock’s upside.
From Seattle’s perspective, the trade framework makes sense. The Mariners possess quality pitching depth but have searched for additional offensive production. Adding an established hitter like Suzuki alongside a promising infielder such as Shaw could address multiple roster needs, and the club could further reshape its lineup through additional deadline moves.
For the Cubs, however, the decision comes down to balancing immediate pitching needs with preserving long-term offensive talent. Hancock would undoubtedly improve Chicago’s rotation and provide stability through the remainder of the decade, but the prospect of surrendering two valuable contributors may prove too costly.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Cubs may indeed have the inside track to land the Mariners’ breakout right-hander. Whether they are willing to meet Seattle’s reported demands remains the biggest obstacle standing between Chicago and one of the most intriguing pitching acquisitions on the market.
