Hoerner endured a difficult start to July, collecting just five hits in his first 36 at-bats of the month. However, his bat has suddenly come alive against Minnesota.
Through the first two games of the series, Hoerner has recorded six hits, highlighted by a dominant four-hit performance on Saturday that helped spark the Cubs’ offense. His ability to consistently reach base has provided a major boost to the lineup and offered encouraging signs that one of Chicago’s most reliable contact hitters is returning to form.
Counsell praised Hoerner’s recent turnaround, noting that the breakout performance had been building for some time and arrived at an important point in the season.
Shota Imanaga Seeking Home Success
The Cubs will hand the ball to left-hander Shota Imanaga, who enters Sunday’s matchup with a 5-8 record and a 4.17 ERA.
Although his overall record has been modest, Imanaga has shown encouraging progress during his last two outings. Despite suffering defeats in both starts, he has posted an impressive 2.79 ERA, indicating that his performances have been stronger than the results suggest.
His most recent appearance came against the Cincinnati Reds on July 10, when he allowed just one run over five innings, giving up seven hits while striking out five batters. However, his outing ended after throwing 102 pitches, preventing him from working deeper into the game despite his effectiveness.
Counsell acknowledged that opposing hitters forced lengthy at-bats throughout the contest, making it difficult for Imanaga to generate quick innings and conserve his pitch count.
The Japanese left-hander has also enjoyed previous success against Minnesota, compiling a 1-1 record with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts versus the Twins.
Twins Trying to Stay in AL Playoff Race

Despite the defeat, the Twins received an encouraging offensive performance from Kody Clemens, who snapped out of a prolonged slump in dramatic fashion.
After going hitless in his previous 19 at-bats, Clemens erupted for two home runs, providing nearly all of Minnesota’s offense and reminding the club of the power potential he brings to the lineup.
Manager Derek Shelton said Clemens appeared fatigued before the All-Star break but was encouraged by the quality of his swings following several days of rest, believing the performance could help rebuild the hitter’s confidence heading into the second half.
