The Arizona Diamondbacks strengthened their lineup just before the MLB trade deadline by acquiring versatile outfielder Lars Nootbaar from the St. Louis Cardinals, addressing one of their biggest offensive needs while continuing their push for a postseason berth. Although the club had hoped to complete multiple moves before the deadline, Nootbaar ultimately became the lone addition after several potential pitching deals fell through.
Arizona sent a package of young talent to St. Louis in exchange for the left-handed hitter, trading right-handed pitching prospect Daniel Eagen, left-handed prospect Sandro Santana, and a player to be named later. Eagen entered the deal as the Diamondbacks’ No. 5 prospect, while Santana ranked No. 26 in Arizona’s farm system. Upon joining the Cardinals organization, the pair immediately became two of St. Louis’ better pitching prospects, giving the franchise additional long-term depth as it continues reshaping its future roster.
The acquisition provides Arizona with much-needed offensive balance against right-handed pitching, an area that had become a priority for general manager Mike Hazen throughout the season. Injuries to several key contributors, including Jordan Lawlar and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., had left the Diamondbacks searching for another dependable bat capable of contributing immediately. While Lawlar is expected to return in the near future, adding Nootbaar gives manager Torey Lovullo another versatile option who can play all three outfield positions while lengthening the batting order.
Speaking before Arizona’s victory over the San Diego Padres, Hazen explained that improving the offense against right-handed pitching was one of the organization’s primary objectives leading into the deadline.
According to Hazen, Nootbaar fit exactly what the Diamondbacks were seeking because of his left-handed swing, disciplined approach at the plate, and ability to consistently reach base. Arizona had originally been linked to several first basemen capable of filling that role, but the front office ultimately identified Nootbaar as the best available solution.
The move also marks Arizona’s second addition of a left-handed-hitting outfielder in recent months. The Diamondbacks previously signed veteran Max Kepler after his suspension ended, but because of that suspension, Kepler will be ineligible for postseason play should Arizona secure a playoff berth. Nootbaar, therefore, offers an important postseason-eligible option as the club attempts to remain in the National League Wild Card race.
While the outfield received reinforcement, the Diamondbacks were unable to address another major concern—their injury-riddled pitching staff.
Arizona aggressively pursued multiple starting pitchers throughout deadline day, but despite extensive negotiations, every significant pitching deal ultimately collapsed before the deadline expired.
Hazen admitted the organization came extremely close on several occasions but acknowledged that circumstances simply did not work in the Diamondbacks’ favor.
The front office reportedly made numerous prospects available in trade discussions and explored deals involving several available starters around the league. However, Hazen drew the line when negotiations began involving important major league contributors, deciding the asking prices became too steep.
Rather than weakening the current roster by moving established players, Arizona elected to stand pat and rely on internal reinforcements.
The Diamondbacks now hope healthier performances from pitchers Zac Gallen, Corbin Burnes, Michael Soroka, Justin Martinez, and Ryne Nelson will provide the boost their rotation needs during the final stretch of the regular season.
Despite some frustration from the front office over the missed opportunities, Lovullo expressed confidence in the group already assembled.
The Arizona manager emphasized that he believes in the players currently inside the clubhouse and feels the addition of Nootbaar enhances an already competitive roster without forcing the organization to dramatically alter team chemistry by adding multiple outside pieces.
Lovullo noted that keeping the core intact while adding one quality player may ultimately prove more beneficial than overhauling the roster at the deadline.
Arizona enters the final months of the season playing some of its best baseball after surging into a tie with the Philadelphia Phillies for the second National League Wild Card position.
That recent success made Hazen’s inability to land additional pitching even more disappointing, particularly as rival contenders such as the Padres, Phillies, and Pirates all made notable deadline additions.
Nevertheless, the Diamondbacks believe Nootbaar can immediately strengthen their lineup.
After missing the first portion of the 2026 season while recovering from surgery on both heels to correct Haglund’s deformities, Nootbaar returned to St. Louis’ lineup in early June looking much closer to his previous form.
The procedure appears to have resolved the lingering discomfort that contributed to the worst offensive season of his career in 2025.
Since returning, the 28-year-old has steadily regained his production, posting a .333 on-base percentage along with a .687 OPS while demonstrating the same disciplined, contact-oriented approach that made him one of the Cardinals’ most dependable hitters in previous seasons.
Although his overall power numbers have not fully returned, Nootbaar continues to provide value through quality plate appearances, strong strike-zone judgment, and defensive versatility.
His ability to handle all three outfield positions gives Arizona flexibility both offensively and defensively as the postseason race intensifies.
Perhaps equally important, Nootbaar remains under team control through the 2027 season, meaning the Diamondbacks are acquiring more than just a short-term rental.
With one additional season before free agency, Arizona gains a controllable everyday outfielder capable of contributing beyond this year’s playoff chase, making the trade a move that strengthens both the club’s immediate aspirations and its outlook for next season.
