Participants were asked to complete a 20-question baseball knowledge quiz designed to measure their understanding of the game, its rules, and historical facts.
According to the results, Diamondbacks fans finished at the bottom of the rankings, tied with Texas Rangers fans after both groups correctly answered only 50 percent of the questions. The findings quickly generated attention online, with some fans questioning whether the results truly reflect baseball knowledge or simply reveal how difficult the quiz was.
Many of the survey questions were far from basic baseball trivia. Instead, they focused on detailed rules and historical information that even experienced fans might struggle to answer correctly. Participants were asked about complicated situations such as what officially qualifies as a balk, whether a pitcher can change throwing hands during an at-bat, and which player holds the record for the most career grand slams.
Some of these questions required a deeper understanding of baseball’s rulebook rather than general fan knowledge. Even longtime followers of the sport may not regularly encounter situations involving pitching regulations or rare historical achievements, making the quiz a challenging test for casual and dedicated fans alike.
Interestingly, Diamondbacks fans received some credit for their honesty before taking the quiz. While Rangers fans who also scored poorly estimated their knowledge level at an average of 8 out of 10, Diamondbacks supporters gave themselves a more modest rating of 6 out of 10.
That realistic self-assessment suggested that Arizona fans may have had a more accurate understanding of their own familiarity with the sport compared to some other fan groups.
At the opposite end of the rankings, fans of the New York Yankees and New York Mets were identified as the most knowledgeable baseball supporters based on the survey results. Their strong performances reflected the long-standing baseball traditions surrounding both franchises and their large, passionate fan communities.
However, the results raise a bigger question: why would a baseball city like Arizona rank so low in a fan knowledge survey?
The state has a deep connection to the sport. Arizona is home to strong high school and college baseball programs, hosts Cactus League Spring Training, and has produced numerous professional players. The region also has a passionate baseball culture that extends beyond the Diamondbacks organization.
One possible explanation is the team’s inconsistent history. Unlike franchises with decades of sustained success, Arizona has struggled to maintain long periods of competitiveness. The Diamondbacks have not reached the postseason in consecutive seasons in more than 20 years, making their successful moments feel like rare highlights rather than part of a consistent winning tradition.
The franchise’s most memorable achievements include winning the 2001 World Series championship and reaching the 2023 World Series, but those accomplishments have been surrounded by long stretches of inconsistency. During the decade under manager Torey Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen, the team entered Wednesday with a record of 709-738, representing one of the more stable but still uneven periods in franchise history.
Some believe that sustained success plays a major role in developing highly engaged fan bases.
