Just In: Tolbert Makes MLB History as Royals Stun Mets

Tolbert entered the record books by matching a rare Major League Baseball record, collecting hits in 12 consecutive plate appearances. Batting ninth in the Royals’ lineup, the second-year player delivered a career-defining night by going 5-for-6, finishing just one hit away from completing a perfect performance.

The historic streak began over the weekend when Tolbert recorded two hits against the Philadelphia Phillies before being removed for a pinch hitter. He continued his remarkable run on Monday, going 5-for-5 with his first home run of the season, and carried that momentum into Tuesday’s matchup against the Mets.

Against New York, Tolbert wasted no time making an impact. He launched a two-run home run in the second inning before adding singles in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. His final three hits came on infield singles, showcasing his speed and ability to consistently find ways to reach base.

Tolbert’s incredible stretch tied the record originally established by Chicago Cubs catcher Johnny Kling in 1902 and later matched by Detroit Tigers first baseman Walt Dropo in 1952. His record-tying hit brought excitement throughout Citi Field, with the stadium scoreboard recognizing the achievement and the remaining fans giving him a standing ovation.

Although Tolbert’s historic streak ended when he flew out in the ninth inning against reliever A.J. Minter, the moment had already secured his place in baseball history. His teammates also celebrated the achievement, applauding from the dugout as he walked back to the field.

While Tolbert provided the headline moment, Kansas City’s victory was fueled by a relentless offensive attack. The Royals erased a 9-4 deficit by scoring five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game before exploding for a seven-run seventh inning that put them firmly in control.

The offensive outburst featured contributions throughout the lineup, with nearly every Royals starter recording at least one RBI. The only exception was Jac Caglianone. Lane Thomas played a major role in the comeback, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Tolbert scored four runs and drove in two.

The Royals’ seventh-inning rally came against Mets rookie reliever Matt Seelinger, who was making his Major League debut. The difficult outing resulted in Seelinger taking the loss, falling to 0-1 after Kansas City’s explosive offensive surge.

Kansas City’s pitching staff managed to hold on despite early struggles. Reliever Beck Way earned his first Major League victory, recording the final two outs of the seventh inning to secure the win. Starter Seth Lugo, however, endured a difficult outing against his former team, allowing a career-high nine runs, six of them earned, over 4⅓ innings.

The Mets’ offense was also highly productive but ultimately could not hold onto its early advantage. Rookie A.J. Ewing continued his impressive start, reaching base in all five plate appearances while going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Superstar outfielder Juan Soto also provided power, hitting his 20th home run of the season, a three-run blast.

Despite scoring 12 runs, New York suffered a historic collapse. The Mets entered the game with an impressive 200-1 record when scoring at least 12 runs, with their only previous loss coming in a 13-12 defeat against the San Francisco Giants on May 24, 2022, despite a memorable three-home-run, eight-RBI performance from Joc Pederson.

The victory gave the Royals a major momentum boost, while the Mets were left searching for answers after one of their most disappointing losses of the season.

Kansas City will continue the series Wednesday, with the Royals yet to announce their starting pitcher. The Mets are scheduled to send right-hander Christian Scott to the mound, entering the matchup with a 2-1 record and a 3.49 ERA.
