The St. Louis Cardinals of the St. Louis Cardinals have been navigating an uneven stretch of their season, and just as it appeared they were edging toward stability, another injury complication has disrupted their plans. Veteran utility infielder Ramon Urias has suffered a setback in his recovery process, pushing back his anticipated return to the big-league roster.
Urías, who was originally placed on the injured list on May 5 due to right elbow lateral epicondylitis, had begun trending in the right direction after starting a minor league rehab assignment on June 4. He appeared in two rehab games and was seemingly closing in on a return to St. Louis, offering optimism that the Cardinals would soon regain a versatile and experienced infield option.
However, that progress has now been halted. According to reporting shared by MLB.com’s Brenden Schaeffer, manager Oli Marmol revealed that Urías has developed a new issue—this time in his left elbow—with symptoms similar to the original injury on his right side. The development effectively resets his recovery timeline and forces the organization back into a waiting game.
The timing is particularly frustrating for St. Louis, as Urías had been expected to provide depth and flexibility across the infield upon his return. Before landing on the injured list, he appeared in 25 games for the Cardinals, struggling offensively with a .158/.279/.316 slash line, two home runs, and five RBIs. Despite those early-season struggles, the club values his veteran presence and defensive versatility, especially given his ability to play multiple infield positions at a moment’s notice.
Across his MLB career, Urías has established himself as a reliable role player over seven seasons, appearing in 566 games with a .254 batting average, 52 home runs, and 220 RBIs. That track record has made him a useful right-handed option off the bench and a steady depth piece for a Cardinals roster that has occasionally lacked consistency in its lineup construction.
Now, with both elbows becoming a concern, the Cardinals are expected to proceed cautiously. Initial optimism surrounding his rehab has been replaced by uncertainty, and if the current issue mirrors the severity of his previous injury, Urías could be sidelined for several more weeks before any realistic return to action is considered.
For a team still trying to stabilize its roster and maintain momentum in a competitive stretch of the season, the delay represents another setback in an already challenging year of managing injuries and lineup adjustments.
