Auburn head coach Alex Golesh landed a major recruiting victory on Saturday when four-star 2027 running back Myson Johnson-Cook announced his commitment, a decision that surprised Miami and much of the college football world.

The commitment represents a significant win for Golesh, who reportedly had interest in Johnson-Cook during his previous tenure at USF but understood that landing a player of that caliber would be unlikely at a Group of Five program like the Bulls.
As one analyst noted, Miami under Mario Cristobal had been viewed as a strong contender for much of the recruitment and even appeared to be leading at times before ultimately missing out. The analyst also pointed out that Golesh, who previously competed with Miami for recruits while at USF, now benefits from Auburn’s stronger national recruiting pull, allowing him to compete for elite talent across the country.
Golesh himself has acknowledged the difference between the two jobs, recently stating that while he believed national championship potential existed at Auburn, he felt that level of success was unrealistic at USF.
Auburn’s history at running back likely also played a role in the decision, with the program having produced NFL talent at the position in recent years despite overall struggles. Johnson-Cook now joins that tradition, adding another high-end piece to Golesh’s offense.
For Auburn, the commitment underscores its ability to out-recruit programs like Miami, while for Golesh it marks a clear step up in recruiting power as he builds his roster in the SEC.
