The New York Mets are reportedly beginning to face growing pressure to reassess the long-term future of infielder Mark Vientos, with some analysts now suggesting that a trade may be the most practical option following another disappointing stretch of performance.
According to Jack Ramsey, what once looked like the emergence of a franchise cornerstone has quickly turned into an uncertain situation. After a breakout 2024 season in which Vientos launched 27 home runs across 111 games and established himself as one of the Mets’ most promising young hitters, his production has sharply declined over the past two seasons.
Since that breakout campaign, Vientos has struggled to maintain consistency, managing just 23 home runs across his last 169 games while posting a modest .405 slugging percentage. His offensive regression has raised concerns about whether his 2024 performance was an outlier rather than a true indication of his long-term potential.
The Mets had recently entrusted him with a significant opportunity at first base following Jorge Polanco’s injury, hoping the increased responsibility would help him rediscover his power stroke. However, the results have been underwhelming. Since taking over the position roughly six weeks ago, Vientos has failed to seize the moment, producing a .653 OPS with six home runs on the season and an overall line that falls well below expectations for an everyday corner infielder.
Over his most recent 33-game stretch as the Mets’ primary first baseman, he has hit just .230/.271/.402 with five home runs, five walks, and 25 strikeouts, highlighting both his lack of discipline at the plate and inconsistency in run production.
Originally drafted in 2017 and once viewed as a key part of the Mets’ long-term core—especially after his clutch postseason contributions in 2024—Vientos’ trajectory has taken a troubling turn. What was once seen as a rising power bat has instead become a question mark in a lineup searching for reliable production.
With reinforcements potentially on the way, including prospects nearing promotion and injured veterans returning to the roster, Vientos’ path to everyday playing time may soon become even more crowded. That has led to increasing speculation that the Mets could explore trade options rather than risk losing value if his struggles continue.
Given his age, prior success, and remaining team control, a trade is being viewed by some as a more strategic move than a release or designation for assignment. Moving him could allow the Mets to address other roster needs, particularly in the infield, while giving Vientos a fresh start elsewhere.
While no specific deal is confirmed, hypothetical scenarios have already been discussed in baseball circles, including potential player-for-player swaps involving other young infielders with upside. The idea would be to exchange struggling but controllable talent in hopes of unlocking better fits on both sides.
