As the 2025 regular season winds down, the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians have each secured their postseason berths, while the Houston Astros‘ playoff hopes have officially ended.

Tigers’ postseason berth clinched

Detroit punched their ticket to October by edging out the Boston Red Sox 2–1. Their pitching staff was sharp, and Jahmai Jones delivered a two‑RBI single that proved decisive. Even though Detroit still trails Cleveland in their head‑to‑head record (and would lose the tiebreaker), they hold the crucial tiebreaker over Houston — meaning that even a tie with the Astros would favor Detroit.

Guardians clinch via dramatic finish

The Guardians clinched a playoff spot in dramatic fashion, defeating the Texas Rangers 3–2 on a walk‑off hit-by-pitch with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-runner Petey Halpin scored the winning run after rookie C.J. Kayfus was struck by a pitch. With that result, Cleveland locked at least a wild-card spot and now leads Detroit by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker, tying for first in the AL Central.

Astros’ streak ends

Despite a convincing 6–1 win over the Angels—highlighted by Christian Walker’s two solo homers—Houston was mathematically eliminated from postseason contention due to the Tigers’ and Guardians’ results. This marks the first time the Astros will miss the playoffs since 2016.

Playoff matchups shaping up

Because Cleveland owns the tiebreaker over Detroit, the two teams will face each other in the first round of the postseason. Detroit, having clinched a wild-card slot, avoids elimination despite trailing Cleveland in their season series. Meanwhile, with Houston out, the AL wild-card race is set without their involvement.
