The Auburn Tigers basketball program is making headlines on two very different fronts. While former Auburn superstar Johni Broome faces an uncertain NBA future following the Philadelphia 76ers’ blockbuster acquisition of LeBron James, head coach Steven Pearl continues preparing his revamped Tigers squad for the upcoming season by scheduling an overseas exhibition against Serbian professional club KK Mega Basket in Greece.
Broome’s professional outlook has become significantly more complicated after Philadelphia’s aggressive offseason moves. According to NBA salary cap analyst Keith Smith of Spotrac, the 76ers have been exploring trade options for the former Auburn All-American, but if no suitable deal materializes, the franchise is expected to waive and stretch his contract to create additional roster flexibility. The move would reportedly help Philadelphia finalize the signing of veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope while managing an increasingly crowded roster.
The roster crunch had been building even before LeBron James arrived in Philadelphia. The Sixers already strengthened their frontcourt by adding former New York Knicks center Ariel Hukporti in free agency, leaving Broome competing for limited minutes behind franchise star Joel Embiid. Philadelphia also has promising young big man Adem Bona in the rotation, making it increasingly difficult for Broome to secure a permanent role despite his impressive collegiate résumé.
Although many Auburn fans hoped Broome would benefit from playing alongside LeBron James one of the NBA’s greatest playmakers and leaders the latest developments suggest that opportunity may never come. Instead, former Alabama standout Labaron Philon, selected 22nd overall in the 2026 NBA Draft, appears more likely to share the court with the four-time NBA champion.
Despite the disappointing news, Broome’s professional journey is far from over. His strong performances during NBA Summer League showcased his scoring ability, rebounding, and basketball IQ, qualities that could attract interest from other NBA organizations once he becomes available. If waived, he is expected to draw attention on the free-agent market as teams search for reliable frontcourt depth.
Meanwhile, Auburn’s current program continues building momentum under Steven Pearl. The Tigers have officially scheduled a pair of preseason exhibition games against Serbian powerhouse KK Mega Basket on August 8 and 9 in Mykonos, Greece. Both contests will tip off at 7 p.m. local time at P. Chanioti Ano Mera Indoor Hall as part of Auburn’s overseas preseason preparations.
The matchup carries an interesting storyline because KK Mega Basket was formerly home to Filip Jović before the talented forward transferred to Auburn for one season and later joined UCLA through the transfer portal. While it remains unclear whether the exhibition was arranged before Jović’s departure, organizing an international trip of this scale typically requires months of planning, including travel logistics, passports, accommodations, security, and scheduling.
The overseas tour also follows a tradition established within the Auburn program. Bruce Pearl previously led the Tigers on an international trip to Israel, giving his team valuable preseason experience through multiple exhibition games. Steven Pearl is now continuing that approach by giving his rebuilt roster an opportunity to develop chemistry against professional-level international competition before the regular season begins.
Auburn also joins a growing list of elite college basketball programs that have faced KK Mega Basket in preseason exhibitions. Kentucky previously played the Serbian club during its 2018 overseas tour, while defending national champion Michigan is also scheduled to face KK Mega Basket this August. The Tigers will have an opportunity not only to gain valuable experience but also to measure themselves against the same competition as some of the nation’s premier programs.
As Auburn looks ahead to another highly anticipated season, the program finds itself balancing excitement about its future with concern for one of its greatest recent stars. While Johni Broome waits to learn where the next chapter of his professional career will unfold, Steven Pearl’s Tigers are focused on sharpening a new-look roster overseas as they prepare to compete for another successful campaign.
