In a surprising late-night move, the New York Mets finalized a trade that sends veteran left-hander David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs, ending his long tenure with the organization and giving the Cubs a much-needed pitching reinforcement.
The deal came together just before midnight, allowing Peterson to remain with Chicago after the Cubs and Mets wrapped up another game in their four-game series. For the Cubs, the acquisition addresses a growing need for pitching depth following the recent injury to starter Edward Cabrera, which left the club scrambling for reliable innings.
While Peterson may not have been one of the most sought-after arms on the market, Chicago clearly saw value in adding an experienced major league pitcher capable of providing innings in various roles. The Cubs were willing to part with one of their more intriguing young prospects to complete the deal.
Heading to New York is 22-year-old corner infielder Cole Mathis, currently ranked as the Cubs’ No. 13 prospect. Though sidelined on the injured list, Mathis brings considerable upside and gives the Mets an interesting developmental piece for the future.
From New York’s perspective, the trade appears to be a strong piece of business. Peterson had struggled to establish himself as a dependable option in the Mets’ pitching plans and was increasingly viewed as a player who could eventually lose his roster spot. Rather than risk losing him for little or no return, the front office capitalized on Chicago’s pitching need and secured a prospect with legitimate potential.
Mathis was selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft and has produced impressive numbers in the minor leagues this season. Across 182 plate appearances in A-Ball, he has posted a .292 batting average, a .396 on-base percentage, and a powerful .585 slugging percentage. While those numbers have come at a lower level of the minors, they highlight the offensive tools that made him an attractive draft pick.
Primarily a first baseman, Mathis provides organizational depth at a position where the Mets lack a clear future cornerstone in the farm system. Several current prospects have shown flashes of promise, but none have firmly established themselves as the long-term answer. As a result, adding another bat with offensive upside is a sensible move for the organization.
The trade also carries an element of long-term intrigue. Mets fans still remember the organization’s decision to send future star Pete Crow-Armstrong to the Cubs in a deal that ultimately did not work out in New York’s favor. If Mathis develops into a productive major leaguer after arriving from Chicago, it could provide a measure of redemption for the franchise.
For now, the early reaction leans heavily in the Mets’ favor. Acquiring a top-15 organizational prospect for a pitcher whose future role had become uncertain represents a solid return. While Peterson could still provide value to the Cubs as a starter or bulk reliever, New York appears to have maximized his trade value at exactly the right time.
Considering the circumstances and the upside attached to Mathis, the Mets can feel confident that they emerged from this deal with a worthwhile asset and a potentially important piece for the future.
