One morning in 1964, Paul McCartney awoke in the small attic bedroom of his girlfriend Jane Asher’s house at 57 Wimpole Street in London. A melody had come to him in his sleep, so complete, so moving, so natural that he was convinced it had to belong to someone else. He darted to the piano at the foot of his bed and began playing the tune before it could fade. To make sense of its structure, he filled in placeholder lyrics that began with the line, “Scrambled eggs, oh my baby how I love your legs.” He spent weeks asking everyone around him, bandmates, friends, and industry insiders, if they had heard the melody before. George Martin, The Beatles’ producer, shook his head. None of the musicians or engineers at Abbey Road recognized it. Even Ringo Starr and George Harrison hadn’t heard it before. Still, Paul hesitated. “I thought someone must’ve written it already,” he recalled. “I had to make sure it hadn’t come from somewhere else.” It felt too perfect to be entirely his. During these uncertain weeks, McCartney carried the tune with him everywhere. He would test it out on friends, cautiously humming the melody and asking, “Does this ring any bells?” No one could name it. There was no trace of it in any existing catalog. Gradually, he came to accept that it had come from his own subconscious, a fully formed gift that arrived in sleep. As The Beatles began work on the album “Help!” in 1965, Paul began refining the lyrics. The humorous “Scrambled Eggs” lines gave way to something more poignant. The opening verse eventually settled on “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away,” and the song took on a tone of heartbreak and loss. Unlike most Beatles songs that featured harmonies or full band arrangements, “Yesterday” was stripped down to Paul’s voice, an acoustic guitar, and a string quartet. It marked a distinct stylistic turn.

Brian Clarke was a dear friend of our family whom we had known for years. Sadly, he passed away recently but we all have lovely memories of the times we had together. We always laughed. Brian often had some great artistic endeavours to show or talk to us about. He made some stained glass windows for us and did a great collaboration with Linda using her photographs to make stained glass pictures out of. He was commissioned to make stained glass for Bahrain Airport (Concordia), Stansted Airport (a collaboration with Sir Norman Foster), and Queen Victoria Street Arcade in Leeds, and these are just some of the works he was famous for. Ever since I met him in the 70s with Robert Fraser the art dealer, we always had the best times together. We will all miss him but have fond memories of him to cherish and his incredible artwork to remind us of Brian himself.

Hoy el mundo será testigo del último concierto de la banda que para muchos es la creadora del heavy metal, Black Sabbath cierra su puerta definitivamente para no abrirla nunca más. Fue allá por 1968 cuando 4 jóvenes empezaban una historia que ni ellos mismos se imaginaban hasta donde llegaría, con talento y perseverancia la banda llegaría a ser grande entre los grandes del metal y rock, los diferentes vaivenes de la vida a lo largo de los años los llevaron por caminos diferentes y hoy se reúnen donde empezó todo para agradecer y decir adiós. Porque no todas las buenas bandas tuvieron una oportunidad para despedirse, hoy agradecemos éste gran acontecimiento y que en vida tengan el reconocimiento que merecen. Black Sabbath nunca se irá del mundo del heavy metal, hoy es solo un adiós simbólico, su presencia y legado ya están para las nuevas generaciones, tuvimos la suerte de ser la generación que vio nacer a Black Sabbath y que los veremos irse como todo en la vida. Hoy no hay espacio para la tristeza, solo para agradecer la existencia de estos monstruos que nos hicieron soñar y amar esta música tan nuestra, tan maravillosa que la hicimos parte de nuestra vida….
