The Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as a team that could benefit significantly from adding an impact bat before the MLB trade deadline, with Minnesota Twins All-Star Byron Buxton being identified as an ideal trade target despite the considerable obstacles standing in the way of any potential deal.
Philadelphia has transformed its season after a disastrous start, climbing back into the National League playoff race under new manager Don Mattingly. Now sitting at 53-43 entering the All-Star break and trailing the division-leading Atlanta Braves by just two games, the Phillies appear poised to be aggressive buyers as they chase their first World Series championship since 2008.
However, the front office still has several roster concerns to address before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Phillies searching for impact additions
While the Phillies have surged back into contention, their roster remains far from complete.
The pitching staff could use another dependable starter as well as additional bullpen depth, but one of the organization’s biggest concerns has become the outfield following Adolis García’s season-ending lat injury.
Philadelphia’s offense has also struggled against left-handed pitching, exposing an imbalance in a lineup built around left-handed stars such as Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh.
That weakness has fueled speculation that the Phillies could pursue a right-handed power hitter capable of making an immediate impact during the stretch run.
Byron Buxton seen as ideal fit
ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan recently identified Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton as Philadelphia’s “dream match” ahead of the trade deadline.
Few players available on the market possess Buxton’s combination of elite defense, power, speed, and postseason-changing ability.
The three-time All-Star has enjoyed another outstanding campaign in 2026 despite recently suffering a hip strain that kept him out of this year’s All-Star Game.
Before the injury, Buxton was batting .271 with a .904 OPS, 25 home runs, and 45 RBIs in just 75 games, once again proving to be one of baseball’s most dynamic players when healthy.
Offensive balance and elite defense
Buxton would address multiple needs for Philadelphia simultaneously.
As a right-handed hitter with significant power, he would help balance a lineup that has struggled against left-handed pitching.
The Phillies have posted just a .224 batting average and a .671 OPS against left-handed pitchers this season, numbers that have exposed one of the club’s biggest offensive shortcomings.
Defensively, Buxton would also provide a major upgrade.
The 2017 Gold Glove winner remains one of baseball’s premier center fielders, bringing exceptional range and athleticism to one of the game’s most demanding positions.
Philadelphia has relied heavily on rookie Justin Crawford in center field, but the young outfielder recently missed games with a knee injury after producing a respectable .263 batting average while driving in 21 runs through 88 games.
Adding a proven veteran like Buxton would not only strengthen the lineup but also improve the Phillies’ outfield defense entering the postseason.
Twins remain reluctant to move franchise star
Despite the appealing fit, completing a trade appears unlikely.
Minnesota Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll recently dismissed speculation surrounding Buxton’s future, making it clear that the organization has no intention of shopping one of its cornerstone players.
Zoll stated that the Twins are not exploring trade possibilities involving Buxton and emphasized that productive conversations with the veteran outfielder continue.
Those comments suggest Minnesota still views Buxton as a central piece of its long-term plans despite the club entering the All-Star break with a 47-49 record and sitting third in the American League Central.
No-trade clause creates another hurdle
Even if Minnesota unexpectedly reconsidered its position, another major obstacle remains.
Buxton possesses a full no-trade clause and reportedly has little interest in waiving it.
The veteran also remains under contract for two more seasons at just over $15 million annually, a team-friendly salary considering his All-Star production when healthy.
That affordable contract only increases his value while making the Twins even less inclined to entertain offers.
Phillies expected to stay aggressive
Although a Buxton trade currently appears improbable, Philadelphia is expected to remain active ahead of the deadline as president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski searches for upgrades capable of strengthening a roster with legitimate championship aspirations.
Whether the Phillies ultimately pursue Buxton or shift their attention elsewhere, the organization is widely expected to explore opportunities to add another impact hitter before the trade market closes.
For now, Buxton remains one of the most attractive names linked to Philadelphia, even if convincing both the Twins and the All-Star center fielder to agree to a blockbuster deal remains a difficult challenge.
