The potential pursuit comes at a time when the upcoming Major League Baseball free-agent market is not expected to offer many obvious impact options at the infield positions. With several contenders searching for additional middle-of-the-order power, Sato’s availability through the Nippon Professional Baseball posting system could make him one of the most intriguing international players on the market.
The 27-year-old Sato has established himself as one of Japan’s premier offensive players. A four-time NPB All-Star, he has been a consistent source of power for the Hanshin Tigers and has already made history by breaking the league’s rookie home-run record. His combination of age, production and international experience could make him particularly attractive to MLB clubs looking for an immediate offensive upgrade.
