The legendary Field of Dreams site in Dyersville, Iowa, came alive once again last Thursday as Major League Baseball, Netflix and Hollywood nostalgia combined to create an unforgettable night for thousands of baseball fans.
More than 8,000 spectators gathered at the iconic Iowa location to watch the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Minnesota Twins in a regular-season game surrounded by cornfields, movie memorabilia and some of the biggest names in baseball history. The event, presented by John Deere and streamed live on Netflix, represented only the third MLB game ever played at the famous movie site.

For fans, the night was about much more than the final score. It was an opportunity to experience the world created by the 1989 Kevin Costner film Field of Dreams while watching professional baseball played on the same property where the beloved movie was filmed.
This year’s game was particularly significant because it marked the first MLB contest at the site in four years. It also introduced a major change: a newly constructed permanent stadium located next to the original movie baseball field and farmhouse.
Fans entered the stadium by walking through carefully arranged rows of corn, creating a scene that appeared to blend the movie’s fictional world with a real major-league baseball event. The anticipation grew as spectators made their way through the cornfield toward the ballpark.
Weather also cooperated at exactly the right moment. After rain had affected Iowa throughout much of the week, the skies cleared before the game, allowing fans, players and celebrities to enjoy the event without the weather becoming a major obstacle.
The original movie field quickly became a gathering point. Fans posed for photographs, explored the grounds and interacted with costumed “ghost” players who played catch with visitors. Baseballs and gloves were available for fans to use, adding to the sense that everyone was participating in the experience rather than simply watching from the stands.
Phillies and Twins players also mingled around the site with their families and teammates. One particularly memorable moment came when Phillies managing partner and CEO John Middleton joined his grandsons on the field to play catch.
For Phillies outfielder and Iowa native Derek Hill, the event carried an especially personal meaning. Hill, who grew up in Des Moines, said returning to Iowa for such a major baseball event was meaningful not only for him but also for the entire state.
Hill had watched Field of Dreams countless times throughout his life and joked that he may have seen the movie almost immediately after being born because of how often he watched it with his father. Returning to the actual location as a major-league player allowed him to experience the film from an entirely different perspective.
The connection between the movie and the event was evident everywhere. Many fans attending the game had rewatched Field of Dreams shortly before traveling to Iowa, reinforcing how strongly the movie’s themes still resonate decades after its release.
Comedian Theo Von, who attended the event, also explained why the film remains meaningful. He described it as a story centered on fathers and sons and said seeing families together at the ballpark helped bring the movie’s emotional message to life.
That enduring popularity is especially notable considering how difficult it was to get the original movie made. Producer Larry Gordon previously revealed that the project faced repeated rejection from Hollywood studios because of its unusual premise a farmer building a baseball field in his cornfield after hearing a mysterious voice and eventually seeing the ghosts of legendary baseball players.
Despite those challenges, the movie became a cultural phenomenon. It received three Academy Award nominations, including a Best Picture nomination, while director Phil Alden Robinson earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The movie’s most recognizable phrases were impossible to escape during the Iowa event. References to famous lines such as “Is this heaven?” and “If you build it, he will come” appeared throughout the grounds, merchandise displays and promotional material.
The baseball legends who participated in the event added another layer of history. Twenty-six Hall of Famers and other baseball icons emerged from the cornfield before the game, creating one of the evening’s most visually spectacular moments.
Among those participating was Hall of Famer CC Sabathia, who admitted that he had only watched Field of Dreams for the first time shortly before the event. The former pitcher said the movie reminded him of the people who introduced him to baseball as a child.
Sabathia’s story reflected one of the central themes of the film: baseball as a tradition passed from one generation to another. He recalled playing catch with his father and uncles and explained how those memories shaped his connection to the sport.
Netflix also assembled a star-studded broadcasting team for the event. Anthony Rizzo, Elle Duncan, Matt Vasgersian and Lauren Shehadi were among the broadcasters involved, while Sabathia, Barry Bonds and Albert Pujols contributed their baseball expertise.
The event represented another major step in Netflix’s growing involvement with Major League Baseball. The streaming service had already presented MLB’s Opening Night and Home Run Derby earlier in 2026, making the Field of Dreams game another major sports event designed to reach a broad television and streaming audience.
The strategy reflects a growing effort across professional sports to turn regular-season games into major entertainment events. Instead of simply presenting another game on a standard schedule, MLB created an atmosphere built around nostalgia, celebrities, history and spectacle.
Broadcaster Matt Vasgersian noted that baseball’s 162-game schedule makes it difficult to create truly special events throughout the season. The Field of Dreams concept solves that problem by combining an actual MLB game with an instantly recognizable piece of American popular culture.
Unlike historic stadiums such as Fenway Park or Wrigley Field, where the history comes primarily from decades of baseball, the Iowa site offers a different kind of connection. The movie was filmed there, the original structures remain, and fans can physically walk through the same landscape that appeared on screen.
Lauren Shehadi described the experience as a defining moment in her life. Having developed a love of baseball as a child, she said the event represented the purity of the sport and the childhood memories associated with it.
The biggest spectacle before the game came when the 26 baseball legends emerged from the cornfield and walked toward the field for introductions. Phillies star Kyle Schwarber and Twins All-Star Byron Buxton helped introduce the legends, while newly inducted Hall of Famers Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent handled the ceremonial first pitches.
Once the game began, Schwarber wasted little time adding his own contribution to the evening’s Hollywood script.
The Phillies slugger opened the game with a home run deep into right field, sending the ball toward the corn and triggering fireworks. The dramatic blast immediately gave fans another unforgettable image to associate with the Field of Dreams.
Schwarber eventually hit two home runs during the game, while Philadelphia produced three homers overall. Minnesota managed one of its own, but the Phillies controlled the contest and eventually secured a convincing 7-1 victory.
The baseball was only part of the spectacle. Corn-themed activities were spread throughout the venue, including a corn-shucking contest, corn-based food offerings and fans dressed in corn costumes and hats. Cornhole games also entertained spectators before the contest and during breaks in the action.
After the final out, the Phillies players celebrated on the field following their dominant victory. For Hill, however, the significance of the evening went far beyond the scoreboard.
As an Iowa native returning to the place where one of baseball’s most beloved movies was created, Hill described the experience as an opportunity to return home and live out a childhood dream.
The night ultimately delivered exactly what the organizers hoped to create: a mixture of baseball, Hollywood nostalgia, family memories and spectacle. For one evening in Iowa, the fictional world of Field of Dreams felt remarkably real and thousands of fans were there to experience it.
With Netflix bringing the event to a global streaming audience, the 2026 Field of Dreams game demonstrated that the movie’s central idea remains powerful decades later: build something special, and people will come.
