Breaking: Pope’s Late Push Could Steal Kentucky a Rising Portal Star

The Kentucky Wildcats have another intriguing transfer option to consider as head coach Mark Pope continues working to finalize his roster for the upcoming season. Former Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler has entered the transfer portal, immediately creating another potential opportunity for Kentucky.

Kohler’s availability comes at a particularly interesting time for the Wildcats. Kentucky is still awaiting a court decision involving Mark Mitchell’s eligibility, while five-star transfer target Keyshawn Hall also remains in the picture. With limited time before the start of the season, Pope now has another talented frontcourt player to evaluate.

Kohler was quickly linked to Kentucky after entering the portal. National college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman identified the Wildcats as a program to watch, although BYU is currently viewed as the early favorite. Kohler’s connection to BYU is understandable because he is from Utah, giving the Cougars a natural geographic advantage.

However, Kentucky has several factors working in its favor. Kohler has reportedly viewed the Wildcats alongside BYU, Kansas and Louisville as potential destinations, meaning Lexington is already on his radar.

Pope now has an opportunity to make up ground

One of the biggest challenges for Kentucky is that Pope and his staff were unable to recruit Kohler directly before he entered the transfer portal. Now that the forward is officially available, Kentucky can finally make its case.

That gives Pope a limited window to convince Kohler that Kentucky is the right destination. With an available roster spot and a potential need for another proven big man, the Wildcats have plenty of reasons to pursue him aggressively.

Kohler also has an indirect connection to Kentucky through his father, who has previously interacted with the Big Blue Nation on social media. While that alone won’t determine where the forward plays, it adds another interesting layer to the recruitment.

Kohler fits what Pope wants from a big man

From a basketball standpoint, Kohler could be an especially attractive option for Pope because of his versatility.

During his senior season at Michigan State, Kohler averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, coming close to a double-double while also shooting 38.9% from three-point range. His ability to stretch the floor could make him a particularly useful complement to Kentucky center Malachi Moreno.

Kohler isn’t simply a traditional interior big. His ability to shoot from outside, rebound and contribute offensively would allow Pope to use him in multiple ways. He could also provide some of the passing and perimeter versatility that Kentucky previously valued from players such as Amari Williams.

Mitchell and Hall make the decision complicated

The biggest question for Kentucky is whether Kohler should become the priority or whether Pope should continue waiting on Mitchell.

Mitchell remains a major target, but his eligibility situation is being decided through the courts. If he receives permission to enter the transfer portal, Kentucky could have another proven SEC player available to pursue.

Hall is another possibility. The Auburn transfer recently received a five-star rating and remains one of the most intriguing players connected to Kentucky.

That leaves Pope with several potential paths as he attempts to fill the final pieces of his roster.

Mitchell could provide physicality and scoring, Hall offers explosive offensive production, while Kohler would give Kentucky another versatile frontcourt option who can rebound and stretch the floor.

Kentucky can’t afford to wait too long

The timing makes the situation even more important. With the college basketball season approaching, Kentucky needs to determine which opportunity offers the best combination of talent, fit and availability.

Kohler may have BYU in front of Kentucky at the moment, but that doesn’t mean the Wildcats are out of the race. Pope now has the chance to close the recruiting gap and make a strong late push.

If Kentucky can move quickly, establish a relationship with Kohler and sell him on his potential role alongside Moreno, the Wildcats could potentially turn what looked like a BYU-heavy recruitment into a legitimate battle.

For Pope, the challenge is clear: make up for lost recruiting time before another program locks up one of the portal’s most intriguing remaining big men.
