PHILLIES UPDATE: Schwarber Powers Phillies to 1.66M Netflix Viewers

Major League Baseball’s return to the iconic Field of Dreams site in Dyersville, Iowa, attracted an average audience of 1.66 million viewers on Netflix, according to Nielsen figures released Tuesday.

The August 13 matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins marked MLB’s return to the famous movie location for the first time in four years. Philadelphia dominated the game, cruising to a 7-1 victory, with slugger Kyle Schwarber providing the biggest offensive highlights by launching two home runs.

The game also represented a significant moment for Netflix, which carried one of MLB’s special-event games for the first time. Despite the novelty of the broadcast, the audience was smaller than the viewership numbers recorded by previous Field of Dreams games that aired on traditional television.

Netflix’s first MLB special-event broadcast

According to Nielsen, the game averaged approximately 1.66 million viewers, with a median viewer age of 46, making it the youngest median audience for an MLB special-event game.

The relatively young audience could be an encouraging sign for MLB and Netflix as the league continues exploring ways to reach viewers beyond conventional television. Streaming has become an increasingly important part of sports broadcasting, and MLB’s decision to place the Field of Dreams game on Netflix gave the platform another opportunity to attract baseball fans.

The Phillies-Twins matchup also provided Netflix with a high-profile event featuring two competitive clubs, while the unique setting gave the broadcast additional appeal.

How it compares with previous Field of Dreams games

The 2026 audience fell well short of the numbers generated when MLB first staged a regular-season game at the Field of Dreams site.

The inaugural contest in 2021, featuring the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox, became a major television success. That game averaged approximately 5.91 million viewers on Fox, making it one of MLB’s most-watched special-event broadcasts in recent years.

The following year, the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds played at the Iowa site, with that 2022 matchup averaging roughly 3.10 million viewers on Fox.

The latest game therefore attracted a significantly smaller audience, although the difference in distribution is important. The earlier games were available through traditional national television, while this year’s contest was streamed exclusively through Netflix.

Phillies deliver on the field

While the television audience was a major talking point, Philadelphia made sure the game itself was memorable.

The Phillies quickly established control and eventually defeated Minnesota 7-1, with Schwarber doing most of the damage. His two-homer performance provided the offensive centerpiece of the night and helped Philadelphia turn the special event into another statement victory.

The Twins were unable to generate enough offense to keep pace, while Philadelphia’s combination of power and pitching allowed the Phillies to cruise to the six-run victory.

MLB’s special-event audience remains strong

The 1.66 million viewers also puts the Field of Dreams game in the same general range as another recent MLB special event.

Last year’s Speedway Classic in Bristol, Tennessee, between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds averaged approximately 1.6 million viewers on Fox. That game was originally scheduled for Saturday night but was pushed into Sunday because of rain.

Meanwhile, MLB’s 2024 game at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, featuring the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, averaged around 2.5 million viewers on Fox.

Those figures show that MLB’s special-event games continue to attract substantial audiences, although viewership can vary significantly depending on the matchup, broadcast platform, scheduling and accessibility.

A new chapter for the Field of Dreams

The latest Iowa game was therefore about more than just the Phillies and Twins. It represented MLB’s latest attempt to combine baseball history, nostalgia and modern media distribution.

Moving the game to Netflix also demonstrated the league’s willingness to experiment with streaming platforms as traditional sports broadcasting continues to evolve.

Although the 1.66 million-viewer audience was below the totals from the first two Field of Dreams games, the event still gave MLB a prominent national showcase and introduced the historic setting to Netflix’s massive streaming audience.

For Philadelphia, the night was even more successful: the Phillies left Iowa with a convincing 7-1 win, powered by Schwarber’s two-homer performance, while MLB added another memorable chapter to its growing collection of special-event games.
