The New York Rangers made one of their biggest moves of the offseason by strengthening their forward corps, agreeing to terms with veteran winger Oliver Bjorkstrand on a one-year contract worth $4.5 million. After taking a relatively quiet approach during the opening stages of NHL free agency, general manager Chris Drury has added an experienced, proven scorer who brings versatility, consistency, and valuable playoff experience to New York’s lineup.

The signing addresses one of the Rangers’ most noticeable needs—a reliable right-shot winger capable of contributing offensively while also playing responsible two-way hockey. With only a handful of natural right-wing options already on the roster, Bjorkstrand immediately provides head coach Mike Sullivan with another dependable forward who can slot comfortably into the team’s top six or slide throughout the lineup depending on game situations.
Bjorkstrand enters New York with an impressive NHL résumé built over more than a decade. Originally selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third round (89th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft, the Danish winger has developed into one of the league’s more dependable offensive contributors. Throughout his career, he has consistently produced points regardless of the role he’s been asked to fill.
Across 704 NHL regular-season games, Bjorkstrand has accumulated 184 goals, 232 assists, and 416 points, demonstrating a knack for generating offense through his accurate shot, strong puck control, and intelligent playmaking. He has also proven capable of elevating his game when the stakes are highest, recording 10 goals and 20 points in 49 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
While a Stanley Cup has eluded him, Bjorkstrand has experienced championship success at nearly every other level of hockey. During his junior career, he helped the Portland Winterhawks capture a WHL Championship before later winning the Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters in the American Hockey League. Those accomplishments reflect a player accustomed to competing on winning teams and contributing during meaningful postseason runs.
Throughout his NHL career, Bjorkstrand has established himself as one of the league’s most dependable secondary scorers. In most seasons, he has produced between 30 and 50 points, offering consistent offensive value without necessarily being the focal point of an attack.
His finest offensive campaign came during the 2023-24 season with the Seattle Kraken, when he recorded career highs with 20 goals, 39 assists, and 59 points. That performance followed another outstanding season with Columbus, where he collected 57 points before being traded to Seattle.
More recently, Bjorkstrand spent time with the Tampa Bay Lightning, joining the club before the 2025 trade deadline. He made an immediate impact after the trade by contributing nine points in just 18 regular-season games, helping strengthen Tampa Bay’s forward depth heading into the postseason.
Last season, however, his offensive production dipped somewhat. Playing in 80 regular-season games, Bjorkstrand scored 12 goals and added 20 assists for 32 points. His playoff run was also relatively quiet, as he was held without a point across four postseason appearances.
Despite that decline, the Rangers clearly believe Bjorkstrand still has plenty left to offer. At 31 years old, there are understandable questions regarding whether his most productive seasons are behind him, but the financial commitment minimizes much of the risk. A one-year deal allows New York to improve immediately without sacrificing long-term roster flexibility or blocking younger prospects expected to challenge for NHL jobs in the near future.
The contract is widely viewed as a smart, low-risk investment. For a modest $4.5 million cap hit, the Rangers acquire a player capable of contributing offensively, driving possession, and playing reliable defensive hockey. His experience, versatility, and ability to move throughout the lineup make him an ideal complementary piece for a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.
The timing of the deal is also significant. Several of the Rangers’ top prospects remain in the American Hockey League with Hartford and could eventually compete for NHL roster spots. Signing Bjorkstrand to a one-year agreement gives the organization a proven veteran while allowing its young talent additional time to develop before making the jump to the NHL.
Ultimately, the addition represents a calculated move by Chris Drury as he continues reshaping the Rangers’ roster for another championship push. Rather than committing significant long-term money in a competitive free-agent market, New York secured an experienced winger who has consistently demonstrated the ability to score, create offense, and contribute in all situations.
If Bjorkstrand can rediscover the form that made him one of Seattle’s top offensive producers just a few seasons ago, the Rangers may have landed one of the best value signings of the 2026 NHL free agency period.
