The Texas Rangers are beginning to look like a legitimate factor in the American League playoff race after putting together an impressive week at home.
Texas entered the 2026 season with plenty of questions after failing to return to the postseason since winning the franchise’s first World Series championship in 2023. For a team that had recently reached the top of the baseball world, the following seasons were a significant disappointment.
This year, however, the Rangers are showing signs that they could be ready to change that narrative.
The American League West has not produced a dominant team, creating an unusually open race for the division. While the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels have struggled, the rest of the division remains within striking distance. That has given the Rangers a valuable opportunity to remain in contention even without playing at an elite level throughout the season.
Entering the new week, Texas sits just a half-game behind the Houston Astros in the AL West. More importantly, the Rangers have created momentum at exactly the right time.
Rangers take advantage of favorable home schedule
Texas had a golden opportunity last week with two struggling teams coming into town.
The Rangers hosted the San Francisco Giants and Baltimore Orioles, both of whom entered the series with losing records. Rather than allowing those games to become potential traps, Texas handled business.
The Rangers won two of three against San Francisco before doing the same against Baltimore, giving them consecutive series victories and allowing them to strengthen their position in both the division and wild-card races.
Those wins may not have carried the same headline value as victories over elite contenders, but they are precisely the types of games a playoff hopeful has to win.
Good teams cannot afford to waste opportunities against struggling opponents, particularly when the division race is separated by such a small margin.
Texas took care of business.
Rangers make a major jump in power rankings
The strong week has also changed how outsiders are viewing the Rangers.
In the latest MLB power rankings from Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, Texas jumped from No. 18 all the way to No. 12.
That eight-position rise reflects more than just a handful of wins. The Rangers are increasingly being viewed as one of the teams capable of separating themselves from the crowded group hovering around the .500 mark.
Reuter highlighted Texas’ position in the standings as well as the contributions of Ezequiel Duran, who has quietly become one of the club’s most valuable players.
Duran is putting together an impressive 2026 campaign, hitting .272/.327/.451 with 22 doubles, 13 home runs and 64 RBI. His versatility has been equally important, as he has started at least seven games at five different positions.
That type of flexibility has given manager Skip Schumaker another valuable weapon while the Rangers navigate injuries, slumps and changing lineup combinations.
Duran may not receive the same attention as some of baseball’s biggest stars, but his production and versatility have made him a key component of Texas’ resurgence.
The AL West is suddenly there for the taking
The Rangers’ biggest advantage may be the uncertainty surrounding the division.
Houston currently holds a narrow lead, but Texas is only half a game behind. That means the Rangers do not need a dramatic turnaround to take control of the race.
They simply need to continue stacking wins.
The division has lacked the type of dominant club that can run away from everyone else, meaning every series carries increased importance. A strong week could completely change the standings, while a poor stretch could send a team several places backward.
That makes Texas’ recent success particularly encouraging.
The Rangers have moved from being a team simply trying to stay relevant to one that has a realistic opportunity to control its own postseason destiny.
Another favorable stretch awaits
The schedule could provide Texas with another opportunity to build momentum.
The Rangers are set to face the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics, two teams that have struggled throughout the season.
On paper, this is exactly the kind of stretch a team in Texas’ position wants.
If the Rangers can continue winning against teams they are expected to beat, they could enter the next round of power rankings significantly higher. More importantly, they could create some separation in the AL West and strengthen their position in the wild-card standings.
However, the pressure is also increasing.
The Rangers cannot afford to overlook struggling opponents simply because of their records. Every team fighting for a postseason spot will be looking to capitalize on favorable matchups, and dropping games against weaker competition can quickly erase the progress made during a successful home stand.
Texas is starting to look like a playoff team
The Rangers still have plenty to prove.
They have not yet demonstrated that they can consistently beat the best teams in baseball, and their position near the .500 mark means there is little margin for error.
But the trajectory is encouraging.
Texas has moved into the thick of the AL West race, owns a favorable position in the wild-card picture and has begun receiving more respect in national power rankings.
The biggest difference compared with the previous two seasons is that the Rangers appear to have a genuine opportunity in front of them.
Their 2023 championship proved that the organization knows how to build a contender. The challenge since then has been finding consistency and returning to October.
Now, with the division wide open, Texas may have found the right environment to make that happen.
The recent victories over San Francisco and Baltimore were not simply two series wins. They were evidence that the Rangers can capitalize when the schedule gives them an opening.
The next challenge is doing it again.
If Texas handles the Angels and Athletics and continues getting production from players such as Duran, the Rangers could rapidly climb both the standings and national power rankings.
For a franchise that has spent the past two seasons watching the postseason from home, the possibility of returning to October is becoming increasingly realistic.
The Rangers may not be the most dominant team in the American League, but after their latest surge, they are becoming one of the teams nobody in the AL West can afford to overlook.
