Red Sox Face Travel Chaos After Flight Delays Ahead of Series Opener Against Mets
The Boston Red Sox encountered unexpected travel problems on Friday as multiple flight delays left the club stranded in Chicago for hours, threatening to disrupt its preparations for the opening game of a highly anticipated road series against the New York Mets.
Following Thursday afternoon’s 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox, which completed a three-game sweep, the Red Sox were scheduled to depart Chicago’s Midway Airport at 8:45 p.m. local time. However, repeated flight issues over two consecutive days prevented the team from leaving as planned, forcing players and staff to remain grounded far longer than expected.
Despite the logistical setback, Major League Baseball had not announced any changes to Friday night’s schedule. As of 2:00 p.m. ET, the first pitch at Citi Field remained set for 7:15 p.m. ET.
According to the team’s revised travel itinerary, Boston was expected to arrive at LaGuardia Airport at approximately 4:10 p.m. ET, leaving only a narrow window before game time. Fortunately for the Red Sox, LaGuardia is located just a few miles from Citi Field, allowing the club a relatively short trip to the ballpark.
Under normal circumstances, players typically arrive at road stadiums four to five hours before first pitch to complete pregame workouts, receive treatment, attend team meetings and prepare for the game. Friday’s delayed arrival significantly reduced that preparation time, creating an unusually rushed schedule for the club.
The travel complications come at an unfortunate time for Boston, which enters the series playing some of its best baseball of the season.
The Red Sox are riding a season-high six-game winning streak after sweeping the White Sox and have won 11 of their last 13 games, climbing back into postseason contention behind improved pitching and timely hitting.
The series against the Mets represents another important challenge as Boston looks to carry its momentum into the final stretch before the All-Star break.
While the delays forced players to endure a travel experience more reminiscent of amateur baseball than the major leagues, the Red Sox remained focused on reaching New York in time to continue their recent surge.
Unless additional travel complications arise, Boston is expected to arrive just hours before first pitch and proceed with Friday night’s opener against the Mets as scheduled.
