With the way the season has unfolded, Boston appears to be one of the few teams in the American League East that can justify standing pat rather than aggressively pursuing upgrades. Injuries, inconsistency, and an unpredictable campaign have left the club in an awkward middle ground, making patience seem like the safest approach moving forward.
Still, not everyone believes the Red Sox should simply ride out the remainder of the year without attempting to improve the roster. There is a growing argument that Boston should at least explore opportunities that could help strengthen weak areas and potentially position the team better for the future.
One of the biggest issues for the Red Sox has been third base. Since moving on from Rafael Devers and failing to bring back Alex Bregman during free agency, the organization has lacked a stable long-term answer at the position. That ongoing hole has fueled speculation about potential trade targets, and one intriguing name has now entered the conversation.
Bleacher Report recently identified Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm as a possible trade candidate. While the Phillies have started to regain momentum after winning seven of their last nine games, there is still speculation that the club could consider moving Bohm if they decide a fresh start would benefit both sides.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report noted that Philadelphia may have stepped away from larger trade discussions involving major stars like Zack Wheeler due to the team’s improved play, but Bohm remains an interesting possibility. Miller described him as the type of player who may simply need a “change of scenery,” especially considering he has struggled to produce power consistently and has not hit a home run since Opening Day.
For Boston, pursuing Bohm would not come without risk. He is far from a guaranteed star and there is no certainty he would immediately become a reliable solution at third base. At times throughout his career, however, Bohm has shown flashes of being an impactful hitter capable of contributing at a high level offensively. Those moments of upside could make him an appealing gamble for a Red Sox team still searching for stability and long-term potential at the position.
Even if Boston ultimately decides not to become aggressive buyers at the deadline, exploring a deal for a player like Bohm could make sense. The Red Sox are in need of talent at third base, and taking a chance on a player with proven ability may be worth the investment if the cost is reasonable.
