OFFICIAL: Phillies Make Key Roster Move as Don Mattingly-Led Turnaround Continues

The Philadelphia Phillies continue to build momentum during one of the hottest stretches of their 2026 season, and ahead of a crucial series against the Cincinnati Reds, the organization has made another roster adjustment aimed at maintaining its recent success.

Philadelphia announced Monday that infielder/outfielder Otto Kemp has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, while Felix Reyes has been optioned back to the IronPigs to create room on the active 26-man roster.

The move comes as the Phillies ride a four-game winning streak and continue a dramatic turnaround following their disastrous 9-19 start to the season. Since Don Mattingly took over managerial duties after the dismissal of Rob Thomson, Philadelphia has looked like an entirely different club, posting an impressive 15-4 record under the veteran skipper.

That resurgence has pushed the Phillies back above .500 at 24-23 through 47 games and firmly back into relevance in the National League race.

The team’s recent surge has been fueled largely by a revitalized offense that has emerged as one of baseball’s most productive units during the month of May. Since the calendar flipped, Philadelphia ranks among MLB’s top offenses in multiple categories, including batting average and OPS, a major shift from the inconsistent production that plagued the club early in the season.

After sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates and taking a series-opening win over the Boston Red Sox last week, the Phillies now prepare for a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park against Cincinnati, hoping to extend their momentum even further.

The return of Otto Kemp represents another opportunity for the organization to inject fresh energy into the lineup.

Kemp initially made the Phillies’ Opening Day roster to begin the 2026 season but struggled to establish consistency during his first stint in the majors. Across 10 games, the right-handed hitter managed only a .282 OPS in limited action before being sent down to Triple-A for additional development.

However, his performance with Lehigh Valley showed clear improvement.

In 84 at-bats with the IronPigs, Kemp collected 22 hits, launched three home runs, drove in 21 runs, and posted a solid .262/.340/.452 slash line with a .792 OPS. His improved plate discipline and increased offensive production earned him another opportunity at the major league level.

Meanwhile, Felix Reyes heads back to Triple-A after serving in a utility role for the big-league roster. While Reyes provided defensive versatility, the Phillies appear focused on finding additional offensive upside as they attempt to keep their hot streak alive.

Philadelphia’s dramatic turnaround under Mattingly has quickly become one of the league’s more surprising storylines. After appearing buried early in the year, the Phillies are suddenly playing with confidence, consistency, and renewed energy on both sides of the ball.

Now, with roster reinforcements arriving and the offense continuing to heat up, the club hopes its strong May performance is only the beginning of a larger climb back into postseason contention.
