The 2026 MLB Home Run Derby delivered a thrilling spectacle at Citizens Bank Park, with Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber electrifying the hometown crowd before finishing as runner-up to St. Louis Cardinals star Jordan Walker in a dramatic championship showdown.

Schwarber entered the event alongside teammate Bryce Harper as one of the night’s biggest attractions, with the two Phillies stars joking before the competition that whoever advanced further would owe the other a prize. While Harper brought his trademark showmanship, Schwarber showcased the elite power that has made him one of baseball’s premier home run hitters.
The Derby opened with Boston Red Sox catcher Wilson Contreras setting the early pace by launching 13 home runs during his opening round. Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker quickly matched that total with an impressive display of raw power, while Kansas City Royals rookie Jac Caglianone struggled early before finishing with eight towering blasts, including several mammoth shots into the upper deck. Chicago Cubs slugger Munetaka Murakami edged Caglianone with nine home runs, while New York Yankees first baseman Ben Rice managed seven. Tampa Bay Rays standout Junior Caminero rounded out the early competitors with 12 long balls.
The loudest ovation of the night came when Schwarber stepped into the batter’s box wearing his cap backward as thousands of Phillies fans rose to their feet. After a slow start that included several outs and foul balls, Schwarber found his rhythm midway through the round. He blasted towering drives into the familiar right-field seats, eventually surpassing Murakami’s total to secure a semifinal berth. Schwarber closed the opening round with 10 home runs despite failing to capitalize on the bonus magenta ball.
Bryce Harper followed immediately after, creating the possibility of an all-Phillies championship matchup. However, Harper struggled to find consistency despite crushing a massive 482-foot home run and making a late push. He entered the bonus swings with eight home runs but failed to connect on the bonus ball, ending his Derby run just short of Schwarber’s total. Harper’s elimination left Schwarber as Philadelphia’s lone remaining representative.
The semifinal round featured Walker taking on Caminero, while Schwarber squared off against Contreras. Walker comfortably eliminated Caminero after the Rays slugger cooled off with only five home runs. Schwarber then delivered another clutch performance, blasting nine home runs despite an early slow start. One errant swing even struck a camera before the Phillies slugger settled into another powerful rhythm.
Contreras had a chance to eliminate Schwarber but faced an overwhelmingly partisan Philadelphia crowd that erupted with cheers after every missed swing and showered him with boos throughout his round. Despite mounting a late comeback and coming within one home run of tying Schwarber, Contreras failed to connect on the decisive bonus ball, sending the hometown favorite into the championship round.
The final pitted Schwarber against Walker for the Home Run Derby title. Batting first, Schwarber delivered arguably his finest round of the evening, repeatedly launching towering drives into the second deck. He became the first participant all night to homer with the special magenta bonus ball, setting an imposing target of 11 home runs for Walker.
Walker, however, refused to be rattled by the relentless boos from the Philadelphia faithful. The Cardinals slugger calmly answered Schwarber’s challenge with a sensational final round, entering the bonus phase with eight home runs before adding four more to finish with 12. His remarkable comeback secured the 2026 Home Run Derby championship, while Schwarber settled for a hard-fought second-place finish after providing one of the night’s most memorable performances.
Although Schwarber fell just short of lifting the trophy in front of the home crowd, the Phillies slugger captivated fans throughout the competition with his trademark power, clutch hitting, and unforgettable performance, helping deliver one of the most entertaining Home Run Derby contests in recent memory ahead of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.
