Florida State’s quarterback picture could become far more complicated following a recent eligibility ruling that may allow former starting quarterback Thomas Castellanos to return for a fifth collegiate season. The development has sparked widespread discussion about what it could mean for Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels, who entered fall camp as the projected starting quarterback for the Seminoles.
The unexpected change comes after players from the 2022 recruiting class became eligible to pursue an additional season of college football. Castellanos, who had previously attempted to secure another year of eligibility without success, now appears to have a renewed opportunity to continue his college career.
That possibility immediately raises questions about whether Florida State head coach Mike Norvell would consider bringing back his former starting quarterback despite already handing the offense to Daniels.
Many observers believe such a move would create unnecessary uncertainty for a team trying to establish continuity heading into the new season. Daniels earned the starting role through months of competition after transferring from Auburn, and introducing another quarterback battle at this stage of the offseason could disrupt the progress the offense has made during preseason preparations.
Daniels arrived in Tallahassee after spending time as Auburn’s backup quarterback behind Jackson Arnold. Although he was expected to serve in a reserve role, Daniels remained prepared whenever his opportunity arose. He stepped into the lineup when needed and demonstrated the leadership and poise coaches look for in a starting quarterback.
While Daniels finished his starts at Auburn without a victory, his overall performance showed encouraging signs. He also played a key role in Auburn’s road victory over Arkansas after entering the game in relief, proving he could effectively guide an offense under pressure. Those performances helped establish him as a legitimate starting-caliber quarterback and ultimately led Florida State to pursue him through the transfer portal.
Since arriving with the Seminoles, Daniels has reportedly impressed the coaching staff with his command of the offense, work ethic, and consistency throughout practices. His development earned him the inside track to become Florida State’s QB1, making him one of the program’s most important offseason additions.
Because of that, many believe replacing or even challenging Daniels now would send mixed signals to both the locker room and future transfer portal additions. Florida State invested heavily in bringing Daniels to Tallahassee, expecting him to become the leader of an offense looking to rebound after an inconsistent 2025 campaign.
Meanwhile, Castellanos remains an intriguing option.
The former Seminoles starter threw for 15 touchdown passes and nine interceptions during the 2025 season while showcasing his athleticism and playmaking ability. Although he entered the NFL Draft, he went undrafted, with some professional scouts viewing him more as a potential receiver or versatile offensive athlete than a traditional quarterback.
Rather than ending his playing career, Castellanos has reportedly remained interested in returning to college football if granted another year of eligibility.
According to reports, he is open to joining a program either as a quarterback or as an all-purpose offensive weapon. Multiple schools have already expressed preliminary interest, meaning Florida State would not necessarily be his only option if he decides to continue playing.
That could ultimately work in Daniels’ favor.
While Castellanos is familiar with the Seminoles program, he has not spent the offseason learning the current offense or building chemistry with teammates under the coaching staff’s latest plans. Reintegrating him into the quarterback room after fall camp has already begun would require significant adjustments at a time when Florida State should be focused on preparing for the regular season.
Norvell also enters the year facing considerable pressure to produce results. After recent struggles, the Seminoles cannot afford unnecessary distractions or instability at the game’s most important position. Maintaining continuity with Daniels may represent the safest path forward as the coaching staff attempts to restore Florida State’s competitiveness.
For Daniels, the latest eligibility news introduces uncertainty, but it does not necessarily signal the end of his opportunity. His strong offseason performance, familiarity with the current offensive system, and the program’s investment in him continue to make him the favorite to lead the Seminoles into the season.
Although Castellanos’ future remains undecided, many expect Florida State to stay committed to Daniels rather than reversing course just weeks before kickoff. Doing so would preserve continuity, reward Daniels for earning the starting role, and avoid creating an unnecessary quarterback controversy during one of the most important stretches of the offseason.
As the situation develops, the Seminoles will continue monitoring Castellanos’ decision, but for now, Daniels appears poised to remain at the center of Florida State’s plans for the 2026 season.
