The Philadelphia Phillies continued their impressive surge in the National League East by riding another outstanding performance from ace Zack Wheeler to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. The win not only extended Philadelphia’s recent hot streak but also spoiled interim manager Andy Green’s debut after the Mets dismissed Carlos Mendoza earlier in the day.
Philadelphia has now won four consecutive games and six of its last seven, while the Mets’ season continued to spiral as they suffered their seventh straight defeat. The latest loss further highlighted the stark contrast between two division rivals moving in opposite directions.
Wheeler once again proved why he remains one of baseball’s premier starting pitchers. The veteran right-hander delivered seven dominant innings, allowing just one run on four hits while issuing only one walk and striking out five batters. Improving to 8-1, Wheeler has now limited opponents to one run or fewer in seven of his 12 starts this season, continuing his remarkable consistency atop the Phillies’ rotation.
Philadelphia’s bullpen protected the slim advantage the rest of the way. Orion Kerkering retired every batter he faced during a flawless eighth inning before closer Jhoan Duran overcame a two-out single in the ninth to secure his 20th save of the season, preserving another important victory for the Phillies.
The Phillies’ offense did just enough to support Wheeler.
After quickly putting pressure on Mets rookie left-hander Zach Thornton, Philadelphia struck first in the opening inning. Trea Turner ignited the offense by smashing the very first pitch of the game for a double off the left-field wall. Kyle Schwarber followed with a single, setting the stage for Bryce Harper, who delivered an RBI single to score Turner and give the Phillies an early 1-0 advantage.
Harper continued his hot stretch by collecting three hits during the game, while Turner once again delivered when it mattered most.
The Mets appeared poised to seize control in the bottom of the first when Carson Benge reached base ahead of Juan Soto, who launched a towering drive toward right-center field that seemed destined for a two-run home run.
Instead, Phillies center fielder Derek Hill produced one of the defensive plays of the season.
Racing back toward the wall, Hill timed his leap perfectly and reached over the fence to rob Soto of a go-ahead homer, preserving Philadelphia’s early lead and leaving both teams stunned. The spectacular catch immediately became one of the defining moments of the contest.
New York finally broke through in the fourth inning. Bo Bichette opened the frame with a double before advancing to third on Francisco Lindor’s groundout. Jared Young then delivered an RBI single to even the score at 1-1, providing one of the few offensive highlights for a Mets team that struggled once again to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Thornton settled in nicely after his difficult first inning, giving the Mets an opportunity to remain competitive. The rookie southpaw pitched six solid innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven and walking one, continuing to show promise despite receiving little offensive support.
The game remained deadlocked until the seventh inning, when Philadelphia manufactured the decisive run.
Derek Hill started the rally with a leadoff single before Bryson Stott worked a patient one-out walk. Turner then came through again, lining an RBI single into left field that allowed Hill to race home with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Mets reliever Huascar Brazobán was charged with the loss after surrendering the deciding run in relief, dropping his record to 4-2.
The victory continued Philadelphia’s resurgence under interim manager Don Mattingly, whose club has become one of the hottest teams in baseball since the managerial change. Meanwhile, the Mets remain trapped in a deep slump despite replacing Carlos Mendoza with Andy Green in hopes of sparking a turnaround.
For the Phillies, another outstanding outing from Wheeler, timely hitting from Turner and Harper, and Derek Hill’s breathtaking defensive gem combined to deliver yet another statement win over a struggling National League East rival.
