The Philadelphia Phillies continue searching for answers to their increasingly concerning bullpen situation, and while outside help remains a strong possibility before the MLB trade deadline, the organization is also preparing to strengthen its pitching depth from within.
Philadelphia’s relief corps has become one of the team’s biggest weaknesses following the likely season-ending injury to Brad Keller, who is expected to miss the remainder of the year with a torn UCL. Combined with inconsistent performances from several relievers throughout the season, the bullpen has become a top priority for the front office as the Phillies battle for a postseason berth and continue chasing the Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
Because of those issues, the Phillies have been linked to several high-profile relief pitchers on the trade market, including recent speculation involving All-Star closer Mason Miller. However, the organization may first turn to one of its own promising young arms.
According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, right-handed relief prospect Alex McFarlane is expected to receive a promotion in the near future. While the news is encouraging for the organization, Phillies fans hoping for immediate major league help will have to wait a little longer.
Rather than heading directly to Philadelphia, McFarlane is reportedly set to move up to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will face more advanced competition as he continues his development. Team sources indicated that the promotion is expected soon, although no official announcement has been made.
The move represents another important step in the 25-year-old reliever’s rapid rise through the Phillies’ farm system.
McFarlane has quietly put together one of the strongest seasons among the organization’s bullpen prospects. In 31 appearances, the hard-throwing right-hander owns an impressive 2.12 ERA while converting 12 of his 13 save opportunities. He has also demonstrated excellent swing-and-miss ability, striking out 45 batters in just 34 innings, numbers that highlight his ability to dominate opposing hitters in high-pressure situations.
His combination of power stuff and late-inning success has made him one of Philadelphia’s most intriguing relief prospects heading into the second half of the season.
Although McFarlane has previously spent time on the Phillies’ major league roster, he has yet to make his MLB debut. That is not expected to change immediately, as the organization appears determined to give him additional experience at the Triple-A level before considering a call-up to the majors.
Still, many within the organization view him as a legitimate candidate to contribute later this season.
If McFarlane continues producing at Triple-A, he could quickly emerge as an internal solution for a bullpen desperately seeking reliable late-inning options. His development also gives the Phillies additional flexibility ahead of the trade deadline, as he could either strengthen the major league bullpen or increase the organization’s depth while the front office explores external additions.
With Philadelphia determined to remain in the playoff race, every bullpen decision will carry added importance over the coming weeks. While McFarlane’s next stop is Lehigh Valley rather than Citizens Bank Park, his continued progress could position him for a major league opportunity before the end of the season.
