BREAKING NEWS: Trade proposal has Mets chasing Cy Young ace to pair with Freddy Peralta

After a rough start to the offseason that saw Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz depart, the Mets steadied things by acquiring Freddy Peralta and adding Jorge Polanco and Bo Bichette. But one analyst believes New York could make an even bigger splash to truly position itself alongside the Dodgers.

Boy do we love Freddy Peralta

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer floated a blockbuster idea: the Mets swing a deal with the Detroit Tigers for two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

In the proposed swap, New York would receive Skubal, while Detroit would land reliever Clay Holmes and two of the Mets’ top prospects outfielder Carson Benge and right-hander Jonah Tong.

Rymer argued that landing Skubal would elevate the Mets from offseason rebounders to legitimate powerhouses. He views Skubal as an upgrade even over Peralta, potentially giving New York one of the strongest front-of-the-rotation combinations in the league and deepening the staff further behind them.

Skubal’s résumé supports the hype. He’s coming off another Cy Young season after posting a stellar ERA, elite strikeout total, and dominant WHIP across a heavy workload. Adding that level of arm to a rotation already featuring Peralta plus a promising young starter would dramatically raise the Mets’ ceiling in the NL East.

The obstacle, however, is cost. Detroit would demand premium young talent, and parting with multiple high-end prospects could be a steep price. There’s also the contract factor: Skubal is expected to command a massive deal in the near future, and New York would have to decide whether it’s willing to commit long-term after giving up so much to acquire him.

Still, if the Mets were to pull off such a move and secure both Skubal and Peralta as long-term anchors, they could form one of the most formidable pitching duos in the division for years.
