The New York Rangers are approaching a crucial offseason as they continue reshaping their roster following a disappointing 2025–26 campaign. Ahead of the trade deadline, the team already moved several key pieces, with Artemi Panarin being the most notable departure.

Although players like Vincent Trocheck and Braden Schneider were also mentioned in trade discussions, both remain on the roster for now. However, there is growing belief that changes involving them could occur before the start of the 2026–27 season. Meanwhile, core players such as Adam Fox and Mika Zibanejad are expected to stay despite some speculation.
One of the most intriguing situations involves Alexis Lafrenière. The former first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft has yet to fully meet expectations, even after signing a long-term, high-value contract. Earlier in the season, his performance did not match his salary, which led to trade rumors surrounding him before the deadline.
Recently, however, Lafrenière has significantly improved his form. Since general manager Chris Drury announced the team’s retooling plans, the winger has produced at a point-per-game pace, tallying 24 points in 24 games. He has also thrived in the absence of Panarin, recording 18 points in 16 games without the veteran forward.
A Key Decision Ahead
With Lafrenière’s recent surge, the Rangers now face a difficult choice. If his strong performances continue, the team may view him as finally realizing his potential and keep him as a core piece in their top lineup. His recent play suggests he can handle a larger role within the team.
On the other hand, New York could capitalize on his rising trade value and explore major deals during the offseason. Earlier hesitation to trade him stemmed from his lowered value, but his recent form may now attract significant interest from other teams.
Draft and Future Outlook
Beyond trades, the upcoming NHL Draft will be critical to the Rangers’ rebuilding efforts. Reports indicate the team prefers acquiring young players with high upside rather than simply stockpiling draft picks. Potential targets could include players like Shane Wright of the Seattle Kraken or Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks.
With limited options in free agency, the Rangers’ success this offseason will likely depend on smart trades and strong draft selections. Holding multiple early-round picks, the team has a valuable opportunity to accelerate its rebuild and shape a more competitive future.
