Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson delivered a more detailed and somewhat reassuring update on star catcher J.T. Realmuto after the club officially placed him on the 10-day injured list with back soreness prior to their midweek clash against the Chicago Cubs.

Thomson explained that Realmuto’s issue is not believed to be structural or long-term, but rather the result of accumulated wear and tear something not uncommon for a catcher who handles a heavy defensive workload while remaining a key offensive contributor. He emphasized that the medical staff expects the discomfort to subside within a few days, and if progress continues as planned, Realmuto could be activated as soon as he is eligible. The team will continue to monitor his day-to-day recovery, focusing on rest, treatment, and light baseball activities before ramping him back up.
Realmuto’s absence is particularly impactful given his importance on both sides of the ball. Beyond his production at the plate, he plays a central role in managing the pitching staff, framing pitches, and controlling the running game. His leadership and game-calling are difficult to replace, meaning the Phillies will likely rely on their backup catching options to step up during this stretch.
The timing of the injury only adds to the team’s concerns. Philadelphia entered the game riding a seven-game losing streak, with inconsistency in both pitching and hitting contributing to their early-season struggles. At 8–15, they sit near the bottom of the National League East standings, ahead of only the slumping New York Mets. With the division beginning to take shape, every game is becoming increasingly important, making Realmuto’s swift return a priority.
Thomson also provided insight into the status of reliever José Alvarado, who has been dealing with his own minor issue. Alvarado completed flat-ground throwing and reported no discomfort, which is an encouraging sign. However, the Phillies are opting for a cautious approach, choosing to keep him out of that night’s game to avoid any risk of aggravation. The expectation is that he will be available again soon if he continues to respond well.
Wednesday’s matchup marked the third game of a four-game series against Chicago, and it represents a critical opportunity for Philadelphia to regain some footing. Avoiding a sweep or further extending their losing streak is essential, especially with key players temporarily sidelined. The Phillies will need contributions across the roster as they try to steady their season while awaiting the return of one of their most indispensable players in Realmuto.
