Transfer News Update: Auburn Secures a Guard Addition while losing a Seven-footer

The Auburn Tigers men’s basketball program is continuing to reshape its roster through the NCAA Transfer Portal, as head coach Steven Pearl works to build his squad heading into his second season. With the portal window officially closing at midnight on Tuesday, April 21, Auburn made a late addition while also seeing one player head out.

On Wednesday morning, former Vanderbilt guard George Kimble III announced that he would be joining Auburn. His commitment came just a day after a bit of roster drama, as Sebastian Williams-Adams reversed course and committed to Vanderbilt instead.

Kimble becomes Auburn’s first guard addition via the transfer portal this cycle. His college journey has included multiple stops he started at Eckerd College in Florida, then transferred to Eastern Kentucky, and later moved to Vanderbilt. Although he missed the entire most recent season due to injury, he previously showcased his scoring ability during the 2024–25 campaign at Eastern Kentucky, where he averaged an impressive 18 points per game.

Looking ahead, Kimble is expected to provide depth in Auburn’s backcourt. With returning players Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton likely leading the guard rotation, Kimble could slot into a backup role, alongside fellow returner Simon Walker, giving the Tigers additional experience and scoring potential off the bench.

Meanwhile, Auburn also saw a departure just before the portal deadline. Seven-foot center Emeka Opurum entered the transfer portal after appearing in only six games for the Tigers. His season was cut short in December due to an undisclosed medical issue, which the coaching staff kept private.

Opurum’s exit doesn’t come as a major surprise given Auburn’s recent additions in the frontcourt. The Tigers have brought in multiple big men through the portal, including two other seven-footers—Bukky Oboye and Narcisse Ngoye—as well as 6-foot-10 forward Owen Freeman. With increased competition at his position and lingering health concerns, a fresh start elsewhere may offer Opurum a better opportunity moving forward.

Overall, Auburn’s transfer activity reflects a clear effort to add depth and versatility, particularly balancing experienced guards with a crowded and newly reinforced frontcourt.
