News Report: Rangers Cut Ties with Former Padres $5 Million-Value Player in Roster Move

The Texas Rangers have parted ways with former San Diego Padres utility player Tyler Wade, granting him his release from a minor-league contract after a short stint at Triple-A Round Rock. Wade had appeared in 16 games with the Rangers’ affiliate but was ultimately let go as the organization adjusted its roster depth.

Wade, who previously played for San Diego during the 2024 and 2025 seasons, appeared in 149 games for the club and served primarily as a versatile bench option. While his offensive numbers remained below league-average production, his value came from his defensive flexibility, as he covered every position except first base and catcher during his time with the Padres. He was also frequently deployed as a pinch runner, especially in high-leverage late-game situations.

However, his role began to diminish late in the 2025 season as San Diego shifted toward other speed options, including outfielder Bryce Johnson. That reduced usage eventually led to Wade being designated for assignment in August, and after clearing waivers, he was sent outright to Triple-A El Paso. The Padres later declined his club option, allowing him to enter free agency and explore opportunities elsewhere.

Despite the roster turnover, San Diego has remained one of the league’s hottest teams, winning 10 of their last 11 games and taking five straight series. The club has continued to perform well even after significant offseason losses, including key departures such as All-Stars Luis Arraez, Ryan O’Hearn, Robert Suarez, and starting pitcher Dylan Cease. Former manager Mike Shildt also stepped away after consecutive 90-win seasons, citing burnout, adding further change to the organization.

Even with those exits, the Padres have managed to stay competitive by relying on depth and role players stepping into larger roles continuing a trend of next-man-up production that has defined recent seasons in San Diego.

Looking ahead, the Padres are preparing for another matchup stretch against the Colorado Rockies, where they aim to maintain momentum after a strong series sweep earlier in the year. Right-hander Randy Vásquez is expected to take the mound in the opener, looking to rebound from a recent shaky outing while also building on his previous success against Colorado, where he has historically performed well.

With a rested bullpen and improved overall form, San Diego enters the series in strong position as they continue to build on one of the most consistent stretches of their season.
