The St. Louis Cardinals have exceeded expectations early this season, emerging as one of the more surprising teams in the National League. After winning 21 of their first 35 games, St. Louis finds itself firmly in the mix in a tightly contested NL Central race.

Even with the strong start, the organization doesn’t appear ready to abandon its long-term rebuilding approach under Chaim Bloom. That likely means the Cardinals won’t pursue splashy additions at the trade deadline though smaller, strategic moves remain possible, especially in the bullpen.
One intriguing option is veteran reliever Andrew Chafin, who recently opted out of his contract with the Cincinnati Reds. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Chafin could provide immediate bullpen help for St. Louis but only under a very specific condition.
The idea would make sense only if the Cardinals view Chafin as more than a short-term patch. If the season takes a downturn, he could become a valuable trade chip at the deadline.
There’s logic behind that thinking. Chafin brings veteran experience, clubhouse leadership, and dependable bullpen innings all areas where St. Louis could use support. The Cardinals’ relief corps has struggled badly this season, posting a 4.92 ERA, the worst mark in the National League.
Still, any potential signing would almost certainly be temporary. Chafin would likely arrive as a rental piece rather than part of the franchise’s future plans. And if he performs well, St. Louis could flip him to a contender in July in exchange for younger talent or prospects.
That possibility is what makes the move intriguing.
At the same time, there’s a legitimate reason for caution. The Cardinals already have several veterans on expiring deals who could become trade candidates later this season. Adding another short-term piece may not align perfectly with the club’s broader strategy.
For now, Chafin remains a free agent, and it’s unclear whether St. Louis sees a true fit. But as the trade deadline approaches, the Cardinals’ handling of veteran assets and Bloom’s vision for the franchise’s future will be closely watched.
