The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be active in the trade market as they search for a long-term solution in right field following the devastating injury to Adolis García. García suffered a torn right lat muscle during a June 10 matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays, an injury that not only forced him onto the 60-day injured list but also could effectively end his brief tenure in Philadelphia after signing a one-year deal this offseason.
In response to the setback, the Phillies quickly brought in depth by acquiring Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox, but that move is viewed more as a short-term bench addition rather than a full-time replacement. As a result, the front office is now exploring more impactful external options to stabilize the outfield for the remainder of the season and beyond.
According to USA Today Sports insider Bob Nightengale, two primary trade targets have emerged for Philadelphia as they evaluate potential upgrades: Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels and Seiya Suzuki of the Chicago Cubs. Both players are seen as realistic options who could step into an everyday role in right field and help offset García’s offensive production.
Adell presents a high-upside, power-oriented profile that closely mirrors García’s offensive style. Through 296 plate appearances this season, he has produced a .249 batting average with a .291 on-base percentage and a .394 slugging percentage, along with 10 home runs, 10 doubles, and 39 RBIs. He has also shown consistent power development, reaching at least 20 home runs in each of the past two seasons, including a career-best 37 long balls in 2025. However, his defensive metrics remain a concern, as he ranks poorly in fielding performance, which could be a liability for a Phillies team emphasizing run prevention.
Suzuki, on the other hand, offers a more balanced skill set and stronger defensive reliability. He has been one of the most consistent performers for the Cubs in 2026, posting a .255/.339/.433 slash line with 10 home runs, seven doubles, and 27 RBIs across 236 plate appearances. His defensive performance has also taken a notable leap forward this season, placing him among the top percentile of right fielders in advanced fielding metrics, making him a more complete option compared to Adell.
Beyond their immediate production, both players carry additional long-term value. Each is under contract through the 2027 season, meaning any deal would not simply serve as a short-term rental but rather a multi-year investment. That aligns with Philadelphia’s broader strategy under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who is seeking to solidify right field stability for the present postseason push and future campaigns.
With right-handed hitters already struggling in key lineup spots particularly against left-handed pitching—the Phillies view both Adell and Suzuki as potential solutions to a lingering offensive imbalance. As the trade deadline approaches, Philadelphia is expected to aggressively pursue upgrades that can help keep its championship window open while addressing one of its most pressing roster weaknesses.
