Just In: Langford, Burger Power Rangers Past Astros

ARLINGTON — The Texas Rangers continued their strong push atop the American League West on Friday night, using late-game heroics from Wyatt Langford and Jake Burger to pull away for a 7-3 victory over the Houston Astros in the opening game of the Lone Star Series at Globe Life Field.

The win improved Texas to 48-46 on the season while extending the club’s recent stretch of impressive play, as the Rangers overcame a late Astros comeback before erupting for four runs in the eighth inning.

After carrying a comfortable lead for much of the evening, Texas saw Houston erase the deficit in the seventh inning, but Langford once again delivered in a clutch moment just one day after returning from the injured list.

The young outfielder opened the bottom of the eighth by launching a go-ahead solo home run, his ninth of the season, restoring the Rangers’ lead at 4-3 and energizing the home crowd.

Moments later, Jake Burger provided the knockout blow.

Following a walk and a single that put two runners aboard, Burger crushed a towering three-run homer to left-center field, extending Texas’ advantage to four runs and removing any late-game drama. The blast was Burger’s 16th home run of the year and capped a decisive four-run inning that secured the series-opening victory.

The Rangers also received offensive contributions from Joc Pederson, who joined Langford and Burger as the club’s home run hitters on the night, helping Texas finish with seven runs against one of the American League’s top pitching staffs.

While the offense finished strong, the foundation for the victory was laid by veteran right-hander Cal Quantrill, who delivered one of his best performances since joining the Rangers’ starting rotation.

Stepping into the rotation after Jack Leiter was sidelined by injury, Quantrill worked six innings, allowing just one run while keeping Houston’s dangerous lineup under control. His efficient outing enabled Texas to build an early 3-0 lead and continue stretching him toward a full starter’s workload.

Quantrill has become increasingly valuable for the Rangers as he regains full strength. Over his last four starts, the veteran has surrendered only four earned runs in 17 innings, providing the consistency the club desperately needed after Leiter’s absence.

Houston, however, refused to go quietly.

After Quantrill exited the game, the Astros rallied against the Texas bullpen, quickly wiping out the Rangers’ lead to tie the contest at 3-3. Veteran reliever Chris Martin once again struggled to protect an advantage, continuing a difficult season in high-leverage situations and placing additional pressure on the Rangers’ offense.

Rather than allowing another late collapse, Texas responded immediately.

Langford’s clutch homer shifted momentum back to the Rangers before Burger’s three-run blast buried the Astros and ensured the bullpen would have breathing room in the ninth inning.

With several key relief arms unavailable, including Jacob Latz, the Rangers turned to Tyler Alexander to finish the game. The left-hander responded with a scoreless ninth inning, closing out the victory without incident.

Although Langford’s go-ahead home run and Burger’s insurance blast grabbed the headlines, Quantrill’s quality start proved equally significant. By providing six strong innings against Houston ace Hunter Brown, the veteran right-hander allowed Texas to remain in position long enough for its offense to deliver another late comeback.

The victory also keeps the Rangers moving in the right direction in their quest to reclaim the Silver Boot, the annual season series trophy contested between the Rangers and Astros.

The rivals will continue their weekend series on Saturday, with Kumar Rocker scheduled to make his final start before the All-Star break for Texas against Houston right-hander Peter Lambert as the Rangers look to build on another confidence-boosting win over their division rivals.
