The 2026 MLB regular season has entered its decisive stretch, with fewer than two weeks remaining before the postseason and several division and Wild Card races still unsettled. The latest standings show a mixture of teams already securing their October places, clubs closing in on division titles and contenders facing a final push to avoid elimination.
The postseason field currently features 12 teams in playoff position, with the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros leading the American League divisions, while the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers occupy the top spots in the National League. The Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox currently hold the three AL Wild Card positions, while the Cubs, Phillies and Padres occupy the NL Wild Card spots.
American League playoff picture
The Tampa Bay Rays continue to control the AL East. Tampa Bay sits at 92-59, with the New York Yankees at 88-64, leaving the Rays 4.5 games ahead of New York. The Yankees have already secured a postseason berth, but the division remains mathematically open. MLB’s current standings give Tampa Bay an eight-game magic number to clinch the AL East.
The AL Central has become one of the league’s closest division races. Cleveland moved into sole possession of first place after defeating Chicago, and the Guardians now sit at 78-75, just half a game ahead of the 77-75 White Sox. The White Sox still occupy the final AL Wild Card position, meaning their remaining schedule could determine both the Central race and the final postseason field.
The AL West is equally unsettled. Houston and Texas are both 76-76, creating a dead-even division race. Houston currently owns the head-to-head tiebreaker, which becomes important because MLB no longer uses a 163rd-game tiebreaker. Instead, head-to-head records and other mathematical tiebreakers determine postseason seeding when teams finish tied.
Texas has gained ground during the stretch run, winning four straight before Wednesday’s victory over Boston. The Rangers’ 7-3 win over the Red Sox pulled them level with Houston, while the Astros lost to Kansas City. The AL West therefore remains one of the most important races to monitor during the final games of September.
Behind the division leaders, Boston currently holds the second AL Wild Card position at 82-70. The White Sox are 77-75, while Texas is just one game behind Chicago for the final Wild Card berth according to MLB’s playoff-picture update. Toronto and Baltimore remain within striking distance, keeping the AL Wild Card race alive.
National League playoff picture
The Milwaukee Brewers have already secured the NL Central and continue to own one of baseball’s strongest records. Milwaukee reached 95-57 after Wednesday’s action and has established itself as the top team in the National League standings. The Brewers are now focused on securing a first-round bye and positioning themselves for home-field advantage deeper into October.
The Los Angeles Dodgers remain in control of the NL West. Los Angeles entered Thursday at 92-60, nine games ahead of San Diego. The Dodgers have already clinched a postseason berth, but the NL West title was still available entering Thursday’s action. MLB listed Los Angeles as capable of clinching the division with a win over Cincinnati or a Padres loss.
The Atlanta Braves continue to lead the NL East. Atlanta sits at 89-64, while Philadelphia is 84-68, leaving the Braves 4.5 games ahead of the Phillies. The Braves also own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Philadelphia, making the division race more complicated for the Phillies even if they continue to gain ground in the standings.
Philadelphia, however, remains in strong Wild Card position. The Phillies currently occupy the second NL Wild Card spot, while the Chicago Cubs hold the first Wild Card position. San Diego is third, with Arizona still attempting to close the gap from outside the playoff field. MLB lists the Padres as holding a 3.5-game advantage over Arizona for the final NL Wild Card position.
The Cubs have also secured important tiebreaker advantages. Chicago owns head-to-head tiebreakers over the Phillies, Padres and Diamondbacks, a potentially significant factor if the teams finish the regular season with identical records.
Updated playoff bracket
If the regular season ended with the current standings, the American League field would consist of Tampa Bay, Cleveland and Houston as division leaders, with the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox filling the Wild Card positions.
The National League field would consist of Milwaukee, Atlanta and Los Angeles as division leaders, with Chicago, Philadelphia and San Diego occupying the Wild Card spots. MLB says the best-of-three Wild Card Series are scheduled to begin on Sept. 29, followed by the best-of-five Division Series beginning Oct. 3.
That means the remaining regular-season games are increasingly important because teams are fighting not only to qualify but also to improve their seeding. The top two division winners in each league receive first-round byes, while the other division winner and three Wild Card teams enter the Wild Card round.
Magic numbers become increasingly important
With the calendar moving toward the final week of September, magic numbers have become one of the clearest ways to measure how close teams are to securing their postseason positions.
The Brewers have already clinched the NL Central, while the Rays, Yankees and Dodgers have secured postseason berths. Milwaukee’s next major target is the first-round bye, while the Dodgers are closing in on the NL West title.
The latest magic-number tracking has Milwaukee four wins away from clinching a first-round bye, while the Dodgers have a seven-game magic number for a bye and a one-game number for the NL West. Atlanta has a five-game number to clinch the NL East and one to officially secure a postseason berth. Philadelphia’s playoff-berth magic number is six.
In the American League, Tampa Bay’s division-clinching magic number is eight. Cleveland and Chicago remain locked in the AL Central, while Houston and Texas continue their direct battle for the AL West. The Wild Card race is particularly important because Boston, Chicago and Texas are separated by a relatively small margin, while Toronto and Baltimore remain mathematically relevant.
Phillies, Cubs and Padres face critical NL Wild Card stretch
The NL Wild Card race could become one of the defining stories of the final weeks. Chicago currently leads the Wild Card standings, followed by Philadelphia and San Diego. Arizona remains outside the field but within 3.5 games of the Padres.
San Diego’s recent surge has added another layer to the race. The Padres entered Thursday at 83-69 after winning nine of their last 10 games. Rookie catcher Ethan Salas also produced the first two home runs of his MLB career in Wednesday’s 9-3 victory over Colorado, becoming the youngest catcher in MLB history to record a multi-homer game.
Arizona therefore cannot afford to lose ground. The Diamondbacks are scheduled to finish the regular season against San Diego in a series that MLB notes could directly determine the head-to-head tiebreaker and potentially have playoff implications.
Philadelphia’s position is also worth watching closely. The Phillies are 4.5 games behind Atlanta in the NL East but sit in the Wild Card field. Their inability to secure the head-to-head tiebreaker against both Atlanta and Chicago could become significant if the final standings produce ties.
Several races could go down to the wire
The 2026 postseason picture is far from completely settled. The AL Central is separated by only half a game, Houston and Texas are tied in the AL West, and the AL Wild Card race still has multiple teams within reach of the final berth.
The NL East remains open, although Atlanta has created separation from Philadelphia. The NL Wild Card race is also not finished, with Arizona still chasing San Diego.
The importance of every remaining game is therefore increasing. A single winning streak can alter a Wild Card position, while one poor series can transform a comfortable lead into a late-season fight. With the postseason scheduled to begin Sept. 29, teams have only a short window left to secure their desired position.
